Toyota and Nissan Halt Production After Japan Earthquake

A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan's Kumamoto region has forced Toyota and Nissan to temporarily suspend production at several factories in southwestern Japan. Although the automakers' facilities escaped major structural damage, disruptions to suppliers and local infrastructure have created significant challenges for manufacturing operations. Toyota confirmed that all three of its affected plants will remain closed until Friday after an initial attempt to restart production. The shutdown impacts engine production, hybrid powertrain assembly and the Lexus manufacturing facility in Miyata. Industry estimates suggest the three-day suspension could reduce output by approximately 5,200 vehicles. Nissan has also paused production, although only selected assembly lines are affected. Unlike Toyota, the company has not announced when operations will resume. Nissan cited shortages of components as the primary reason for the temporary shutdown, highlighting how vulnerable modern automotive supply chains can be after natural disasters. What does this mean for buyers? Around 90% of the Lexus vehicles built at Toyota's Miyata plant are exported overseas, including to the United States. Models such as the Lexus ES, Lexus RX, Lexus UX, and Lexus NX are assembled there. Nissan's affected factories also produce vehicles including the Infiniti QX80 and Nissan Armada, both of which are sold in international markets. Could supply shortages become a larger problem if supplier disruptions continue? Reports indicate that at least two parts manufacturers have already suspended operations, raising concerns that production delays could extend even after Toyota and Nissan restart their own factories. While a brief shutdown is unlikely to significantly affect vehicle availability, a prolonged disruption could create noticeable delivery delays.
