On the other hand, Ferruccio Lamborghini did make his fortune building farm tractors and heavy-duty industrial heating equipment, so the mighty LM002 all-terrain vehicle was in the end not that much of a stretch. The LM is the third version in a series that began with a similar vehicle called the Cheetah, most of the market being in Saudi Arabia and other desert countries with vast expanses of sand that needed to be crossed in short order, but a few found their way into private hands. The LM002 was the most exotic off-road vehicle of its time by a desert mile, and in private hands the most rare. Only 328 LM002s were produced between 1986-92, with a scant 48 produced for the U.S. market in 1990, one of them is this imposing example now showing 16,886 kilometers. The Lamborghini LM002 is powered by the 5.2L V-12 engine with double overhead cam and four-valve heads rated at 450 HP, teamed with a 5-speed ZF transmission and four-wheel-drive. Finished in a shade of Red that could only be found on an Italian exotic, the LM002 features integrated step-ups to allow easy entry into the most luxurious interior ever to grace an off-road vehicle, with unknown quantities of Tan leather and burled wood trim aplenty. The LM002, also known as the 'Rambo Lambo' , came equipped in a manner one would expect from one of the world's foremost supercar manufacturers, boasting a sumptuous leather-trimmed interior, tinted power windows, and air conditioning as standard. The LM002 had resulted from a Lamborghini project to develop a military off-roader, the first prototype, which appeared in 1977, being named 'Cheetah' . In its earliest form Lamborghini's all-terrain warrior was fitted with a rear-mounted Chrysler V8 and lacked a roof or any doors to speak of. Shortly thereafter the LM001 emerged, this time boasting an enclosed body with four doors and a somewhat feeble AMC V8 engine, again mounted in the rear. The finished article finally arrived in 1985 in the shape of the front-engined V12-powered LM002, which was offered in military or luxurious civilian versions, the latter equipped to individual customer tastes. Some were bought by armed forces in the Middle East but proved to be expensive to maintain and were disposed of, ending up in civilian hands. A total of 328 LM002s had been completed when production ceased in 1993. Chassis number '12134' reportedly was ordered for the personal use of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Apparently he ordered three cars for himself: one in red, one in white and this one in black. This LM002 comes with its factory build sheet which clearly records J B Automobiles in Paris as the supplying dealer for the French market, with first delivery date of 22nd December 1988. However, the first-customer field is blank, likely unique among LM002s, which only adds to the mystery surrounding the first owner. Reportedly, the Lamborghini was later brought to Marbella, Spain, and eventually bought by a Swedish Lamborghini collector. Today the car is registered in Sweden (EU). While in the hands of its Swedish owners, this Lamborghini LM002 has been partially restored, receiving new paintwork in recent years. The interior has been kept in unrestored and preserved condition, especially the seats, strongly supporting the odometer reading of 28,995 kilometres. Mechanically the car is described as in good running condition; it has been used recently and everything is said to work very well with no warning lights. It is fitted with the correct tyres from the latest production batch. The current owner notes that the underside is exceptionally clean, which is especially significant for an LM002, where abuse, poor storage, off-road wear, and neglect often reveal themselves very quickly underneath. As many LM002s seen publicly have often suffered from long periods of inactivity, deferred maintenance, or purely superficial preparation, this clean and well kept example will surely delight its next custodian for many years to come. Au total, 328 LM002 avaient été construits lorsque la production a cessé en 1993. Le châssis numéro « 12134 » aurait été commandé pour l'usage personnel du dictateur libyen Mouammar Kadhafi. Il aurait apparemment commandé trois voitures pour lui-même : une rouge, une blanche et celle-ci, noire. Ce LM002 est accompagné de sa fiche de construction d'usine qui indique clairement J B Automobiles à Paris comme concessionnaire fournisseur pour le marché français, avec une date de première livraison fixée au 22 décembre 1988. Cependant, le champ « premier propriétaire » est vide, ce qui est probablement unique parmi les LM002, ce qui ne fait qu'ajouter au mystère entourant le premier propriétaire. Selon certaines informations, la Lamborghini aurait ensuite été amenée à Marbella, en Espagne, avant d'être finalement rachetée par un collectionneur suédois de Lamborghini. Aujourd'hui, la voiture est immatriculée en Suède (UE).
