Ford Escort Mk.I RS 1600 BDA Zakspeed, 1970

Chassis No.: BMA2909M Registration: UK Taxes paid • Race prepared but never actively raced • BDA engine reconditioned and bored to 1800cc It was the Escort that really put Ford on the rallying map, proving capable of winning World Championship events from 1968, when the Twin Cam model was the works' frontline rally car, right through to 1981 when Ari Vatanen became World Rally Champion driving an Escort RS. In 1970, the Ford Twin Cam engine was replaced by a Cosworth BDA 16-valve unit to create the definitive Escort rally car: the RS1600. In its ultimate form the Escort RS1600 proved good enough to win the RAC Rally three times on the trot between 1972 and 1974, as well as a host of other World Championship events. Founded in 1968 by Erich Zakowski, Zakspeed built and campaigned heavily modified Ford Escorts that became dominant forces in European touring car racing during the 1970s. The Zakspeed Escorts, driven by racing legends such as Hans Heyer and Klaus Ludwig, solidified their place in German motorsports history. For example, chassis ZAK-E23/75, one of the Group 5 Escorts, won the DRM Division 2 championship in 1975. Many of the original cars survive today and are raced in historic motorsports events. This stunning BDA engined RS1600 is presented in Yellow Zakspeed colours and sitting on Compomotive 13" wheels. It was purchased by our vendor with the intention to actively race it, however, due to other race and family commitments it has never seen a hill climb let alone a hairpin corner. The car was fully restored and rebuilt in South Africa where our vendor purchased it. Specified with a fully rebuilt BDA engine bored out to 1800cc built by F.R.E.D. Race Engineering Development, Killarney racetrack Cape Town. This included 711 Kent bottom end, LT1 cams, Allot dry sump tank, refurbished Twin 45 Weber carbs, aluminium radiator and oil cooler, a 20 litre aluminium fuel tank with the engine mated to a Ford type 9 four-speed gearbox and Borg Warner LSD. The 1970 Type 49 chassis was treated to a full bead blast bare metal restoration with rotisserie full nut and bolt rebuild with new window glass and rubber, steel bonnet, door and boot lid, fibre glass bubble arches and front fenders a FIA approved roll cage, Cobra race seat and floor mounted race pedal box with bias control and VDO instruments. It has fully adjustable front suspension with top strut turrets, coil over front shocks and additional anti-roll bar, the rear suspension is five link fully adjustable rose joints with Koni coil over shocks and brakes are to the front 4 pot Brembo calipers with vented discs and the rear 2 pot calipers over solid discs. The car is supplied with confirmation the UK taxes have been paid and South African registration document with VIN33379. We are advised this car would be fully eligible for racing but would need any paperwork updated and certain safety aspects inspected or scrutineered beforehand. Consigned by Mathew Priddy The car is currently located in Staines-upon-Thames, Berkshire This description is provided by the seller and to the best of the seller's knowledge, accurate and not misleading and unless otherwise stated is 'Not Verified' by Historics or any person employed by Historics. Ford Escort Mk. I RS2000 Evocation, 1970

Chassis No.: BBATJD76126 Registration: FWB 926H • High-quality RS2000 Evocation • 2.0 litre Zetec 'Blacktop' engine with twin Weber 45 DCOEs • Five-speed manual gearbox Built to a very high standard as a tribute to the legendary Mk. I RS2000, this 1970 Ford Escort has undergone a documented restoration before being transformed into the striking example offered today. Originally a standard Mk. I Escort finished in blue, DVLA records show it remained with its third registered keeper from 2000 until 2016 before passing to its next owner in 2017. During this ownership, the car was comprehensively rebuilt as an RS2000 evocation, faithfully recreating the appearance of Ford's iconic AVO-built performance Escort while incorporating carefully selected modern upgrades. It now forms part of a significant private collection and is offered for sale as the current owner reduces the collection. Power comes from a 2.0 litre Ford Zetec 'Blacktop' engine fitted with twin Weber 45 DCOE carburettors, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. Renowned for its sharp throttle response, reliability and evocative induction note, this specification delivers performance well beyond that of the original RS2000 while retaining the Mk. I Escort's engaging rear-wheel-drive character. The specification includes a fully restored bodyshell, performance cooling system, fuel cell, digital dashboard, custom-built oil catch tank, RS-style alloy wheels, quad headlamp grille, OMP suede steering wheel, BB-trimmed sports seats with contrast stitching and a full roll cage. The overall condition of the vehicle is excellent, having covered very few miles since its comprehensive restoration. It presents exceptionally well throughout. Beautifully presented throughout, this Escort successfully captures the style and spirit of the iconic RS2000 while benefiting from modern Zetec reliability and enhanced performance. Equally suited to classic road rallies, enthusiast events or spirited weekend driving, it represents an exciting opportunity to own a superbly executed Fast Ford evocation. This Escort offers its next custodian an outstanding driving experience at a fraction of the cost of building one to this standard today. We believe the cost of recreating this car to a comparable specification would be close to twice the auction estimate. Ford Escort Mk. I Fast Road/Rally car, 1968

Chassis No.: CS22HS75934 Registration: CVG 871F • Very tastefully built fast road/rally car • 1600cc crossflow engine with twin choke Weber carburettor • Excellent early shell The Ford Escort has been a popular car in the rallying scene since its introduction in 1968. It has been used in a variety of rally events, from local club events to the world championship. The Escort has a long history of success in rally, having won many WRC events, and even winning the highly regarded RAC rally in eight consecutive years between 1972 and 1979. The Escort is well known for its durable construction, reliable performance, and excellent handling characteristics. The Escort has proven to be a great car for rallying, with its lightweight construction and powerful engine. Its suspension set-up and ground clearance makes it easy to handle on any terrain, while its low centre of gravity ensures good stability. This example arrived in the UK from South Africa around three years ago and is a very early and remarkably solid shell, which looks to be a very original structurally and the exterior wears a very attractive patina which suits the car well. The first UK owner added the bubble arches you see today and the finished product is a very tastefully built Mk. I Escort which would make a lovely fast road car or could quite easily be put into use on the rally scene. Power comes from a very sweet 1600cc Crossflow engine with twin choke Weber carburettor, and we are told the car drives particularly well with good power and a smooth gearbox. A motorsport fuel cell has been fitted in the boot, as well as a half roll cage (bolted in) and a pair of Sparco Sprint bucket seats. Continuing the motorsport theme, a set of 13” Minilite wheels and Cibie spotlights are also fitted. This really is a very attractive Escort at an equally attractive price and is supplied to auction with a V5C registration document.
