Fold-down bedsides and weathertight lower compartments made the 1960 Volkswagen Transporter a practical pickup in its time. With a nearly two-fold increase in engine displacement, this VW single cab Resto Mod is ready to haul into the future. The Type II Transporter was overhauled into its current high-performance custom state by Cookers Restoration of Williamsport, Maryland. The rare pickup rolled into the shop for a rotisserie restoration in 2016 and roared out two years later. Its unique combination of classic VW style and time-proven aftermarket performance landed the transformed Transporter onto the cover of "Hot VW" magazine.
Two-tone Olive Green and black paint is accented by deluxe factory chrome trim with red pinstripe center and dressed body-color bumpers. Pop-out front split windshields and sliding side-window glass open up to reveal a maroon-over-black interior with sculpted two-tone door panels. The cushioned bench seat is swathed in custom upholstery and equipped with dual G-force racing belts for comfort and safety. The original equipment VDO speedometer is augmented with a Pro Comp tachometer and Auto Meter auxiliary gauges.
The original 1200cc engine was relegated to history, and the transplanted 2180cc flat-4 engine packs dual 2-barrel carburetors with open-element air cleaners and billet aluminum throttle linkage for crisp response. The combination packs nearly twice the displacement of the original engine and is capable of belting out almost three times the factory horsepower. The air-cooled boxer engine is backed up by a 4-speed manual transmission. Gloss black finish on the EMPI fan shroud, intake manifolds and block add to the clean look of the detailed engine compartment, and Wilwood disc brakes scrub off speed with authority.
The custom Transporter rolls on mirror-polished Fuchs-style wheels shod with staggered aspect-ratio Continental radial tires for a raked-forward attitude to match its formidable air-cooled Volkswagen performance.
