Rolls-Royce first used the name Corniche in the 1930s upon a prototype Bentley Mark V with coachwork by Carrosserie Vanvooren of Paris. After undergoing a 15,000-mile endurance run throughout Europe, the car was blown up by a bomb on a dock in Dieppe, France, awaiting shipment to England. Rolls-Royce would resurrect the name in 1971 to rename the Silver Shadow Mulliner Park Ward Fixed Head Coupe and Drop Head Coupe introduced in 1966. Corniche would be offered as Corniche, Corniche II, Corniche III, and Corniche IV, and span production until 1995 when the final car would roll out of the factory in Crewe, England.
The last 25 Corniche IVs were completed in the Summer of 1995; called Corniche S, they were equipped with turbochargers. In 2000, Rolls-Royce introduced Corniche V, which remained in production until 2001 when company ownership changes occurred with Rolls-Royce and Bentley. This 1980 Corniche is one of 3,239 Drop Head Coupes produced between 1971 and 1985, and marks the first year the 6.75L V-8 would employ Bosch fuel injection, which added power, aided in smoothness, enhanced efficiency, and increased overall reliability. Having undergone a comprehensive, bare-metal restoration, this car presents extremely well in White-over-Ruby interior.
Connolly hides complement the refinished woodwork, and a new top, complete with pads and headliner, round out the restoration. Roughly $15,000 was spent on the engine and transmission rebuild alone, performed by Bearing Service.
