After the economic crisis of the late 1920’s, many manufacturers tried to renew their offering to survive. The Sochaux firm produced its first mass-produced model, the 201, representing the entry-level model of the firm. It was a real commercial success, and was soon followed by a mid-range counterpart: the 301. From the beginning, this model was declined in four distinct versions, of which the rarest and most prestigious is the Roadster. Our example is one of these rare versions, and has an interesting history. Its current owner found the car in South Africa, where it had been imported apparently in the early 1970s by «Peugeot South Africa» to be displayed.
After a change of management in the mid-1980s, a South African enthusiast bought the car in a rather poor state of preservation, and undertook a complete restoration that lasted until 2000. The current owner bought the car from this South African enthusiast in 2000, before having it imported to England. The current file of this 301 testifies to the numerous letters sent between these two enthusiasts, absolutely fascinating, and retraces a great part of the history of this car and the works from which it benefited. After its arrival in England, its owner used it during many events, until the Traversée de Paris 2020!
The maintenance of this car continues to be followed, as shown by the invoices in the file. Between 2006 and 2007, the car was sent to the French specialist Culasse 77 for an engine overhaul, and the rims were repainted on the same occasion. In total, nearly 18 000 € will be spent for this work! Still today, the paint done at the time of its life in South Africa looks very good, just like the interior. The car is in a very good condition, which shows the regular maintenance of this beautiful French car. The last invoice is a change of tires in 2019.
