Started in 1910, the Morgan Motor Company of Malvern Link, Worcestershire built its first four-wheeled car in 1935. Until that time, all Morgan’s had been three wheelers. The new model designated 4/4, signifying four wheels and four cylinders. The original 4/4 used a Coventry Climax engine. When revived in 1955, the 4/4 used Ford power built in Britain. From 1954 the Plus 4 became available, using the bulletproof Triumph TR3 engine, this quickly became the preferred model, especially in North America. After Triumph changed to a six-cylinder engine in 1967, discontinuing the TR4 engine, Morgan responded by uprating the 4/4 with a Weber carburetted 1600cc Ford Cortina engine. A year later Morgan introduced a new model, the Plus 8 powered by a Rover V8 unit replacing the Plus 4.
This, original, right hand drive Morgan 4/4 is shown in the factory register to have been completed on the 28th November 1966 with disc brakes, heater and ‘pump up’ bucket seats. Supplied through Bowman & Horik and registered in the UK as NNP 397E and sold to a family who then moved to Washington, United States taking this Plus 4 with them. Looking at the Certificate of Title the owners then moved to California and registered the car there in 1990. After a while the car was placed into long term storage which accounts for its good rust/rot free condition. Returned to the UK in December 2020 the current owner has had the car running but it would need fully recommissioning before being used.
It is a very good candidate for a complete restoration. Finished in red with the original black interior this Morgan Plus 4 is supplied with the Californian certificate of title, the NOVA registration number and copies of the records about the car from the factory ledger.
