The 1971 Lotus Elan Plus 2 was a refined evolution of the original Elan, offering more space and comfort while preserving Lotus’s legendary handling. Designed as a 2+2 grand tourer, it featured a lightweight fiberglass body over a steel backbone chassis. Powered by a 1.6 litre twin-cam engine producing around 118hp, it delivered brisk performance and precise cornering. The Plus 2 retained Colin Chapman’s core philosophy of ‘adding lightness’, resulting in agile dynamics despite its added practicality. With elegant styling, pop-up headlights, and a well-appointed interior, the Elan Plus 2 remains a cult classic for enthusiasts who appreciate both performance and charm.
Registered in 1971, this Elan presents extremely well in red coachwork and a black interior. The engine bay is in good order and this enthusiast-owned example has benefited from over £10,000 expenditure on parts and servicing. On a recent test the engine ran extremely well and we are informed that on any journey the car gets many admiring comments. The Lotus Elan Plus 2 has the most beautiful lines which still look current over 50 years on. For its time, it had stunning performance and handling and is a highly desirable sportscar.
