When it came to magnificent luxury automobiles built in the U.S., Lincolns were in a class of their own. The Continental design, such as the version offered here from 1965, is considered by some to be America’s first personal luxury car, and the name would be the mainstay of the brand for most of the following half-century. This fourth-generation version was popularized in media, seen by television show audiences ranging from “Green Acres” to “Perry Mason,” and any 1964-65 Continental can aptly hold the word “classic” to this day.
The 1965 Lincoln Continental was the final-ever American-built four-door convertible and best noted for the forward-opening “suicide” rear doors, and this example was rescued after sitting in a barn for 38 years. A two-year nut-and-bolt restoration was performed, including stripping the expansive body down to bare metal. Riding on a 126-inch wheelbase with a base price of almost $7,000 in convertible trim, less then 10% of 1965’s 40,100 unit production were created on this platform, as only 3,356 convertibles were sold that year. Styling had been retrofitted for the ‘65 model year, with ribbed chrome corner lamp housings developed and cast to match the just-refined grille design.
A high line of chrome trim went body-length atop the fenders and doors on each side, while small script Continental emblems identified the package. Under the hood is a 430 CI V-8 big-block engine overhauled to factory specifications and complete with a Carter 4-barrel carburetor, 10.0:1 compression ratio, a correct fresh exhaust system and a conservative 320 HP rating. The automatic transmission was standard equipment on the Continental, as was a six-way power seat, remote control outside rearview mirror, dual exhaust, power steering, power brakes, power door locks and carpeting. Front disc brakes and seat belts became standard equipment that year as well.
A new gas tank has been installed on this Lincoln, while inside is a custom white interior covered in comfortable material and featuring a column shifter. There is professionally restored chrome throughout, and the black car rides on wide whitewall tires that are stunningly complementary to the white interior. Evoking the feel of its era, this Lincoln Continental convertible remains a classic luxury car by any measurement.
