At the dawn of the 21st century, Lamborghini was under new German ownership as part of the VW group under Audi A.G. and the timing was right for a successor to the long-running Diablo. Unveiled in 2001 with a stunning nighttime presentation at the base of Mount Etna before a select group of 200 invited guests, the new Murciélago wowed all onlookers. Totally modern and shockingly angular in design, the new Lamborghini’s heritage was unquestionable. Its specifications and performance credentials matched the new car’s looks, including the Murciélago’s midmounted 6.2L/570 HP V-12 engine, which boasted heritage back to the original Lamborghini V-12 design of the early 1960s.
An advanced all-wheel drivetrain maximized power delivery. Translated from Castilian Spanish as “Bat,” the Murciélago followed Lamborghini’s tradition for naming many of its models after legendary Spanish fighting bulls, in this case a leading sire who managed to survive an epic 1879 fight in Córdoba. Production of the first series Murciélago, including the example from 2004 offered here, spanned 2001-06.
Styling was updated and numerous detail-oriented running improvements silenced the doubters and conclusively proved that Lamborghini was still more than capable of improving on its pioneering supercar design and engineering prowess—all while maintaining the glorious madness and sex appeal that are integral to Lamborghini’s image. Yet, for all its performance, the Murciélago marks a quantum leap forward in drivability, thanks to Audi’s influence. A first-generation example, this steely Metallic Gray 2004 Lamborghini Murciélago features the F1-style paddle-shift automatic transmission.
The black bucket-seat interior features eye-catching red contrast stitching, and desirable passenger amenities include power windows and locks, a factory AM/FM/CD audio system and logoed floor mats. A new battery has been installed as well. Power 4-wheel disc brakes with red calipers reside behind a set of 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, and a central-exit dual exhaust system delivers this Murciélago’s unforgettable and decidedly aggressive V-12 soundtrack.
