Topping the 512 Berlinetta Boxer was no easy feat, but in the fall of 1984, Ferrari unleashed the Testarossa on the world at the Paris Motor Show. The sleek yet radical Pininfarina-designed Testarossa, or “redhead,” is centered by a Flat-12 boxer engine with red-painted camshaft covers that lend the car its name. This U.S.-specification model was crafted into existence at the Maranello factory in September 1988 and traveled most of its 9,536 miles in sunny California. This very definition of '80s supercar featured the most powerful production engine of its time, and it recently underwent a service and mechanical inspection in preparation for its next owner.
With four camshafts and four valves per cylinder, the U.S.-specification 4.9L flat-12 engine was factory rated for 380 HP at 5,750 RPM and 354 lb-ft of torque. Bosch K-Jetronic electronic fuel injection with Marelli Multiplex ignition brought modern drivability and performance. Four-across bright-tipped exhaust deliver sound and style. The limited-slip transaxle is matched with a 5-speed manual gearbox that channels power to the rear wheels. With determined shifter throws, the Testarossa could run from 0-60 MPH in 5.3 seconds, achieve a top speed of nearly 180 MPH and click off a mid-13-second quarter mile at more than 105 MPH.
The original Nero Black paint almost subdues the signature side strakes, which not only define the style of the Testarossa, but have the important function of channeling air over the dual rear-mount radiators. The rear fenders conceal an ultra-wide rear wheel and tire package engineered for traction to match the flat-12 horsepower. The black leather interior is an original blend of Italian coachwork with ‘80s-styled driver-centric controls. Factory air conditioning works to keep the cabin of this culturally iconic ‘80s classic comfortable at rest or speed.
