An engine-out service performed by a proper marque dealership in recent years should instill confidence in this particular 2002 Ferrari 575M. In the case of a V-12 grand tourer such as this, that means, first and foremost, comfortable and easy to handle while still fast. Built from 2002–2006, the 575M Maranello could draw on the six years of feedback its predecessor had garnered, the 550 Maranello that had brought the civilized front-engine GT flagship car back to Ferrari—quite the radical departure from the model that preceded it, the iconic and wild Testarossa. The 575M kept what was good in the 550 and made it better, and, of course, raised horsepower by means of increasing displacement.
Most especially, this is a car even a tall person can comfortably sit in all day, in a relatively relaxed and normal position, and get in and out of without contortions. Also, it is the first consumer Ferrari to use paddle shifters—purists may also groan at the electrohydraulic manual F1-style transmission’s full auto mode, but those are the creature features that make this model easy to live with. (Not even a tenth of the about 2,000 cars built were ordered with a manual shifter.) Besides, only the F1-optioned models have launch control, which automatically adjusts clutch engagement and throttle position to give a 575M the best possible standing-start getaway.
The Pininfarina design is classically proportioned with a long nose, short deck and relatively tall greenhouse. The cockpit is the last of the “analog” ones with a profusion of gauges and buttons. Ferraris as capable and timelessly designed as this 575M represent a good point of entry into the stratospheric world of collector V-12 Ferraris.
