In 1976, Ferrari announced the 512 Berlinetta Boxer as a replacement for the 365 GT4 BB, building on that model’s success with subtle but significant developments, most notably a front air dam and wider rear wheels to improve high speed stability and NACA ducts in the lower rear body to aid brake cooling. As Ferrari’s flagship model, the 512 BB sported advanced all-independent wishbone suspension, a 4-speed manual gearbox, 4-wheel disc brakes and 15-inch single-lug alloy wheels, and such amenities as air conditioning and power windows.
Although displacement of the midmounted flat-12 engine was increased from 4.4 to 5.0L, peak power dipped from 360 HP to 340 HP; still, the 512 BB remained the top speed champion in magazine tests. In 1981, Ferrari introduced the most refined version of the series, the 512 BBi with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and Digiplex electronic ignition. One of 1,007 built from 1981 to 1984, this 1983 512 BBi is offered with just 10,310 miles on the odometer.
It was imported in June 1983 by Grande Auto Imports, whose proprietor, Elvidio Grande, owned several exotic car dealerships including Grande Auto Imports, Auto Palace Sales and Lamborghini of Pittsburgh and was well known on the East Coast for helping customers navigate the import and federalization process for European exotic sports cars. This is a premier example of Ferrari’s mid-‘80s flagship model finished in Rosso Corsa paint and retaining its original tan leather upholstery, and its interior features a Pioneer radio and equalizer.
Part of a private collection since 1999, it has benefited from time-scheduled services regardless of mileage, including new timing belts in 2000 at 9,000 miles and again in 2008 at 9,700 miles, an extensive service including two Bosch injection pumps in 2014 and new Michelin TRX tires in 2022. It is offered with a tool roll, map reading light, an owner’s manual set and documentation that includes the warranty card identifying Elvidio Grande of Apollo, Pennsylvania, as the original owner, and maintenance invoices from Sport Auto LTD in Ridgefield, Connecticut, since 1999.
A heady concoction of performance, historical significance and sheer charisma, this Ferrari 512 BBi will make a very special addition to any fine collection.
