Having reasserted itself at the top of the supercar hierarchy with the first Berlinetta Boxer - the 365 GTB/4 BB - Ferrari went one better with its successor, the 512 BB. For the new Boxer, Ferrari abandoned its long-standing practice of denoting a model by the capacity of an individual cylinder and adopted the Dino-type nomenclature where '512' indicates 5 litres/12 cylinders. The increase in engine size from the original Boxer's 4.4 litres was made not so much with increased power in mind but to enable the 512 BB to meet increasingly stringent emissions targets without loss of performance.

Displacement was increased by enlarging both bore and stroke, while in addition the compression ratio was raised and dry-sump lubrication adopted. The result of all these changes was a useful increase in torque which, coupled with revised gear ratios, made the 512 more tractable.

Changes to Pininfarina's inspired coachwork were, not surprisingly, few: an air-dam spoiler beneath the nose, brake-cooling NACA ducts ahead of the rear wheel arches, four rear lights instead of six and revised air intake boxes, while slightly fatter rear tyres meant that the width of the 512's rear grew by just over 25mm. The running gear likewise came in for only minor revision, gaining stiffer springs/anti-roll bars and altered damping rates, while the already excellent all-round ventilated disc brakes remained unchanged. Inside, the 512 remained virtually the same as before but for the welcome adoption of multi-way adjustable seats in place of the fixed originals.

Road & Track magazine had achieved a speed of 175mph (280km/h) in the preceding 365 GT/4 BB, and although lack of road space prevented the discovery of their test 512's capability, Ferrari's claimed maximum of 188mph (302km/h) was felt entirely realistic. The fact that this was down 4mph on the Lamborghini Countach's 'fastest ever' maximum was considered unimportant. "That's because, taken on balance, the Ferrari 512 Boxer wins a more important award, as the best all-round sports and GT car we've tested," enthused the highly respected American motoring magazine. "If we had to pin the reasons down to one it would have to be that the Ferrari doesn't forget the driver.

The Boxer has it all, the speed, the handling, the lovely shape, the well done cockpit and, most important of all, a reputation for reliability."

Possessing an engine directly related to Ferrari's contemporary Formula 1 unit, as well as being both lighter and faster than the legendary Daytona, the 512 BB was one of the most capable and exciting supercars of its era and is still capable of providing all the thrills that an enthusiastic owner-driver could wish for.

This car's accompanying Massini Report reveals that it was built in January 1979 and finished in Nero with Bordeaux leather interior with black inserts, its present colour scheme. According to the vendor, the first owner was the Picasso-specialist art dealer, Adrian Goetz. In 1997 the Ferrari passed into the hands of its second owner, Massimo Rossi, a resident of Nyon, Switzerland and in May '97 participated in Ferrari's 50th Anniversary Meeting at the Maranello factory (entry number '253'). The Boxer was registered on Swiss license plates 'VD 40862' and thereafter 'VD 128667'. The Ferrari later passed to Modena Cars in Geneva, from whom it was purchased by the present owner in 2017.

Described by the vendor as in very good original condition in every respect, this magnificent Berlinetta Boxer is offered with a Swiss Carte Grise and sundry invoices for maintenance and servicing work carried out.

With the value of V12 Ferraris from the 1960s and 1970s having increased dramatically, the potential of the Berlinetta Boxer series, and particularly original examples such as this one, is being increasingly appreciated.

Pour cette nouvelle Boxer, Ferrari abandonna sa tradition de désignation de ses modèles par leur cylindrée unitaire et adopta le principe de numérotation déjà vu sur la Dino : 512 pour 5 litres et 12 cylindres.

L'augmentation de cylindrée par rapport au premier Boxer de 4,4 litres n'avait pas tellement été effectuée pour gagner en puissance, mais pour permettre à la 512 BB de satisfaire sans dégradation de ses performances des exigences d'émissions toujours plus sévères. Outre une augmentation d'alésage et de course, le moteur avait bénéficié d'une majoration de son taux de compression et du passage à une lubrification par carter sec. Il était résulté de ces modifications un gain en couple particulièrement bienvenu qui, allié à de nouvelles démultiplications de boîte, avait bien fait progresser la 512 en souplesse.

La géniale carrosserie due à Pininfarina n'avait, sans surprise, que peu évolué : un spoiler sous l'avant, des prises d'air NACA devant les passages de roues arrière pour le refroidissement des freins, quatre feux arrière au lieu de six, des entrées d'air modifiées et un élargissement de l'arrière d'à peine plus de 25 mm dû à des pneus légèrement redimensionnés. De même, la suspension n'avait que peu évolué, des ressorts et barres anti-dévers plus raides et un amortissement revu, mais les quatre excellents freins à disque ventilé étaient demeurés inchangés. A l'intérieur, la 512 était restée quasiment identique, si ce n'est l'adoption bienvenue de sièges aux multiples réglages, en remplacement des précédents sièges fixes.

Le magazine Road & Track avait atteint sur la 365 GT/4 BB une vitesse de 280 km/h, et même s'il n'avait pas pu, faute de circuit disponible, découvrir ce dont la 512 BB était capable, les 302 km/h revendiqués par Ferrari lui avaient semblé tout à fait réalistes.

Et les 6 km/h qui manquaient par rapport à la Lamborghini Countach, la "plus rapide au monde", étaient jugés sans importance. "C'est que, tout bien pesé, la Ferrari 512 Boxer remporte un prix bien plus important, celui de la meilleure des sportives et des GT que nous ayons essayées," s'enthousiasmait ce très respectable magazine automobile américain. "Si nous devions ne retenir qu'une seule raison, c'est parce que la Ferrari n'oublie pas son conducteur. La Boxer réunit tout ce qu'il faut, la vitesse, le comportement, un style merveilleux, un habitacle réussi et, le plus important, une bonne réputation de fiabilité."

La 512 BB, qui était équipée d'un moteur descendant en droite ligne du moteur des Ferrari de Formule 1 de l'époque et qui était à la fois plus légère et plus rapide que la légendaire Daytona, était l'une des supercars les plus performantes et les plus enthousiasmantes de son temps ; elle est toujours en mesure d'offrir à un propriétaire passionné toutes les sensations qu'il en attend.

Le rapport Massini qui accompagne la voiture nous apprend qu'elle a été construite en janvier 1979 ; elle était noire Nero avec un intérieur en cuir bordeaux à inserts noirs, son harmonie de teintes actuelle. Selon son vendeur, elle a eu pour premier propriétaire Adrian Goetz, le marchand d'art spécialiste de Picasso. Puis elle est passée en 1997 entre les mains de son deuxième propriétaire, Massimo Rossi, de Nyon, en Suisse, qui l'a fait participer en mai 1997 au rassemblement qui a eu lieu à l'usine de Maranello pour le 50e anniversaire de Ferrari ; elle y arborait le numéro 253. Cette voiture a été immatriculée en Suisse sous les numéros VD 40862, puis VD 128667.

Elle a ensuite été confiée à Modena Cars, à Genève, chez qui son propriétaire actuel l'a achetée en 2017. Cette magnifique Berlinetta Boxer, que son propriétaire décrit comme étant dans son état d'origine, très bon à tous égards, est proposée avec sa carte grise suisse et différentes factures relatives aux opérations d'entretien subies.

La cote des Ferrari V12 des années 1960 et 1970 a considérablement augmenté et le potentiel des Berlinetta Boxer, en particulier celui des exemplaires en état d'origine tels que celui-ci, ne cesse de s'affirmer.
