The Ferrari 348 marked a distinct departure from the 328 and 308 that preceded it, and it truly ushered the Prancing Horse brand into the 1990s, albeit with some obvious design cues that gently nod to the past. The 348 was penned by Pininfarina and featured the straked air intakes and rectangular tail lamps that debuted on the iconic Testarossa. Although these stylistic touches were controversial at the 348’s 1989 debut, they have now become emblematic of a certain era in Italy.
Sitting just behind the driver and passenger is the 348’s upsized 3.4-litre, 32-valve, V-8 motor, which can produce a full 300 horsepower. Sending that horsepower to the rear wheels is a transverse five-speed manual transmission, a gearbox that inspired the 348’s TB (Berlinetta) and TS (Spider) nomenclature. Although most 348s were built as road going models, the platform was highly adept on closed courses. Of particular note was Ferrari’s decision to bridge the gap between its Formula One racing efforts and private campaigns, which was accomplished by offering dual-purpose factory-built 348s for the track. The 348’s legacy very much continues today.
The early-production 348 TB offered here, however, has led a most pampered life. It has been with its original owner since being assembled in Maranello back in 1990, and it shows fewer than 600 kilometres from new on its odometer. As such, it is presented in truly factory-original condition, with its Rosso Corsa paint and tan leather trim looking exactly as new. As is to be expected with this 348 TB’s limited use, few flaws are evident. In addition to its standard features, this 348 TB is also equipped with optional air conditioning and ABS brakes.
This original and pristine Ferrari 348 TB is simply awe-inspiring, not only for its preservation but also for its status as the seminal transition to monocoque chassis and longitudinal engine design with Formula One-derived transverse gearboxes.
