Of all the cars that are rated as muscle from 1970, the Dodge Coronet is one of the most interesting, and this worked Hemi Resto Mod stretches that term. This would be the final year this Dodge model was offered as a performance car or as a two-door release, with the Charger becoming the focus for those aspects of Dodge B-body marketing in 1971. The restyling of Coronet for that year is singular, with paired chrome grilles surrounding the headlamps. If that look wasn’t for you, there were lots of other possibilities in a sea of reworked GTOs, GSXs and GTXs available, and, as a result, the 1970 Coronet is a fairly scarce model.
This Super Bee example is a factory V-code build that has benefited from a rotisserie refinishing. Under the hood now is a 426 Hemi V-8 engine making 550 HP, complete with custom-milled valve covers, an oval air cleaner, heavy-duty ignition pieces, March serpentine air conditioning and power steering system, and a Be Cool aftermarket radiator. It is backed here with a Tremec T56 Tranzilla 6-speed manual transmission and an 8.75-inch Mopar rear end with 3.73 gears. As part of the suspension changes, this car received Wilwood disc brakes and has been mini-tubbed. The body itself is redone in orange with black accents on the hood blister, fender scoops and rear Super Bee stripe.
The interior is done tastefully in rich red-brown material and features high-back front bucket seats, Dakota Digital gauges in the dash, an upgraded steering wheel and a Hurst Pistol Grip shifter mounted through the floor. Final modern touches include the Savini three-piece 20×8 front and 20×14 rear wheels wearing upgrades narrow-profile tires. The requisite bee emblems are evident throughout as well. With more than 1,500 hours expended in this car’s construction, it offers great possibilities as both as an eye-catching showpiece or as a car worth driving just for fun.
