With the hemispherical combustion chambers, Chrysler figured out how to make an engine more efficient and produce more power, a combination rarely seen together. Engineering and development led to the 331 CI V-8 “FirePower” engine, the first Chrysler Hemi for a motorcar, released in 1951. Hemi engines easily impressed with their efficiency and powerband, propelling New Yorkers and Imperials effortlessly along the highway and accelerating from a standstill to 60 MPH and beyond in times seldom heard of before in a mass-produced car.
In 1955, Chrysler took it to the limit by introducing the limited-edition C300, an immensely powerful coupe with an astonishing level of luxury appointments that arguably squared it with some of Europe’s best luxury performance cars. For the 1962 model year, Chrysler leveled the belt line of its 300 by removing the fins, moving away from the flamboyant ’50s into the modern and sleek realm of the 1960s. As proof of its scintillating performance, a 300H helped the legendary Andy Granatelli blitz to another Flying Mile record at Daytona, clocking 179.4 MPH. In terms of exclusivity, a 300H convertible was one of the most expensive cars on the market, priced at about $5,500.
This 1962 300H convertible was treated to a frame-off restoration by marque expert Don Hughes. Completed in 2015, the car emerged in a fabulous hue of Festival Red with a tan interior by Gary Goers and covered by a black top. Only 123 300H convertibles were built in 1962, each with the 413 V-8 Wedge producing 380 HP and a whopping 450 lb-ft of torque. Twin Carter 4-barrel carburetors fed the massive engine which used solid lifters, dual exhaust and an automatic transmission with pushbutton controls feeding the power to a 3.23 rear end.
Equipped with power steering and power brakes, the 300H wowed everyone with four bucket seats and a full-length center console, and if that wasn’t enough, this example also boasts factory air conditioning, a power convertible top, chrome wire wheels and wide whitewall tires.
