The original series of Chrysler 300s were trendsetters, as Chrysler used this exciting model as its top-tier offering outside of the Imperial line for over a decade. Indeed, young Chrysler executive Bob Rodger had first introduced the 300 in 1955 to build a new class of Chrysler products. This particular car, painted Sage Green with a matching Green leather interior and top boot cover, was one of only 123 300H convertibles produced for the 1962 model year. This was a luxury performance car, marketed as the peak of power and engineering coupled with style.
There was always a high-performance engine as part of the 300 line as well, and each yearly release was denoted by a sequential letter given after the numeral 300. By 1962 and the 300-H seen here, that was the 413 CI raised-block wedge-head, in this case using the inline twin Carter four-barrel layout rated at 380 HP and 485 lb-ft of torque. The engine was backed by the well-designed TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic, which was shifted by a series of push buttons on the dash. The interior features front and rear bucket seats, a console-mounted tachometer, in-dash clock, Chrysler’s Golden Tone push-button radio with associated power antennae, center arm rest, and an abundance of chrome trim.
The luxury appeal continues to the exterior, with its quad headlights, chromed and colored Chrysler and 300H specific callouts, and expansive body lines. Rounding the package out are fresh wide Whitewall tires riding on special Tru-spoke wheels, tinted glass and low-restriction dual exhaust. Considered a car with exclusivity even when new, this sizable Chrysler represents the apex of a rapidly changing automotive marketplace from the early 1960s.
