Sometimes billed as the first muscle car, Chrysler’s letter series vehicles became near-immediate legends among American automobile releases by taking advantage of the public’s growing desire for sport-based luxury models. While the vaunted 392 Hemi engine had given way to the even-larger RB-series wedge by the time the 300G arrived on the scene for 1961, the vehicle remains a sleek motorcar that highlighted Chrysler’s noted emphasis on engineering. An Amelia Island show car, the example offered here was one of only 337 300G convertibles produced that model year, which would be a transitional period from the styling of the past.
The fins were still in place, but the grille was now inverted and angled headlamps produced a Jet Age appearance. In use, the cars were highly regarded by period road testers for both agile highway manners in their size class and excellent acceleration. The latter was due to the 413/375 HP engine with long-ram induction, which this car has. Immediately identified by two long, red intake manifolds that stretched across the lifter valley, each of which supported a 4-barrel carburetor, this engineering feat gave the intake charge a “sonic flow” via RPM-based resonance. This was the reason for the intake runner’s physical length.
A deep-skirted casting design, the 413 would be the basis for the upcoming 426 variants made famous in racing. The engine here is backed by a pushbutton-operated TorqueFlite transmission and 8.75-inch differential, with 12-inch power assist brakes and power steering also on tap. The reddish-bronze body features chrome side spears, with a round 300G emblem on each side. Completing the look is a white top with a contrasting black leather interior. The amenities in a 300 were always upscale, and here that meant front bucket seats, a center console, dash-mounted shift buttons, an AM radio, a padded dash and brightly polished surfaces.
Finally, this car rides on 15-inch wheels with wide whitewalls and full-size hubcaps. The seventh in the 300 series and iconic in its essence, this 300G convertible represents the stunning styling of the early 1960s with horsepower to spare.
