The letter-series Chrysler models were truly performance cars for gentleman. While horsepower played a starring role on vehicles like the 1961 Chrysler 300G offered here, it was the deluxe standard equipment and brand recognition that helped close the deal. As one of only 1,280 300G hardtops produced during the run, this car is the result of a comprehensive restoration and was part of the Reggie Jackson collection at one time. Beneath the hood here is the matching-numbers 413/375 HP RB-series wedge V-8 engine, and it is an eyeful thanks to its factory long-ram induction layout.
With dual offset carburetors that seemingly reached to the fenders, this design served as a passing gear triumph, since the ram tube lengths were designed to come into their optimal range at lower RPMs, force-feeding the air-fuel mixture sonically into the cylinders. Gold air cleaners, orange paint and OEM detailing are also under the expansive hood. This is all backed by the pushbutton-operated automatic transmission. While the car is large dimensionally, both power steering and power brakes are here to assist driving. The exterior’s sheet metal is finished in rich black paint, with the interior featuring bright red leather upholstery with unique swivel bucket seats.
Of course, there are deluxe features inside, such as factory air conditioning, the full-length center console, power windows and locks, the Astradome instrument cluster, driver’s side remote mirror, the pushbutton radio, chrome trim and tinted glass. For 1961, styling on the G used tall angular tail fins, angled quad headlamps, a rear-quarter-length chrome spear with a centered 300G callout emblem, massive bumpers and a curvaceous rear cab treatment. Of course, rolling in style meant real chrome wire wheels and wide whitewall tires, all of which blend into the car’s overall presentation.
For the luxury-minded buyer who wanted power, the 300-series Chryslers were considered upper-echelon fare. Scarce today, this restored example from 1961 shows some of the highest levels of comfort and engineering technology that could be had during this era.
