Standing at the pinnacle of America’s luxury-car market, GM’s Cadillac division went from strength to strength during the immediate postwar era, including brand new postwar models for 1948 and a powerful new OHV V-8 engine by 1949. Based on the El Dorado Golden Anniversary concept car that wowed visitors at GM’s 1952 Motorama traveling roadshows, the Series 62 Eldorado Convertible reached limited production in 1953. By 1956, the Seville two-door hardtop joined the Eldorado series, while the glamorous Eldorado convertible was named “Biarritz” after the exotic French seaside town.
Handsomely restyled for 1957, the glamorous Eldorado provided a production preview of the styling cures that would be applied to the rest of the Cadillac model line in subsequent model years. Cadillac’s proprietary 365 CI V-8 engine was continued with twin carburetors in Eldorado tune and delivered a power bump to 325 HP with a compression increase to 10:1 for the first time in Cadillac history. Just 1,800 examples of the top-of-the-line Eldorado Biarritz convertible were manufactured for 1957, priced from a lofty $7,286. This 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible was restored to original specifications from 2010 to 2012.
Powered by a rebuilt 365/325 HP V-8 engine paired with a 3-speed Turboglide automatic transmission, the Eldorado V-8 of course features Rochester dual 4-barrel carburetors beneath an iconic batwing air cleaner. A multiple-award winner, the Eldorado is finished in Metallic Elysian Green paint with Mint Green leather seats. Interior highlights include restored instruments, a power-operated front bench seat, a padded dashboard with drum-style clock, the Autronic Eye automatic headlight dimmer, power brakes, power windows, a power trunk release and a power-operated white convertible top. The 4-wheel power drum brakes have been serviced.
Aluminum Sabre wheels mounting L75-15R whitewall tires provide the crowing touch to this 1950s American luxury icon.
