A Buick like no other was a true statement to the end of the Grand National era in 1987. This car, showing an amazing 371 original miles since delivery, lived up to the performance legacy the upscale GM brand wanted to achieve without becoming outrageous. The company had embraced Grand National stock-car racing with 1981 Daytona winner Richard Petty and had used a turbocharged V-6 engine in an Indy 500 pace-car effort in 1976. In 1984, the first of the turbocharged V-6 Grand National Regals arrived to the thrill of performance-hungry enthusiasts regardless of brand preference.
The Regal’s rear-wheel-drive platform would be discontinued after 1987, the same year this car was built and the reason it was painstakingly preserved from its purchase date. By now, the 3.8L V-6 engine featured an intercooled layout, which had pushed its performance to a factory-rated 245 HP and 355 lb-ft of torque, featuring sequential fuel injection and computer-controlled ignition. Those who felt it under acceleration became rapid believers, and corporate pressure was reportedly on from Chevrolet to not let the model outshine the Corvette. The body was aero-stylized thanks to NASCAR’s superspeedways, and the car came in one color: sinister black.
It is backed by a 4-speed automatic transmission and limited-slip differential. The window sticker is still in place, showing this car received power locks, power windows and cruise control, plus the $895 T-top roof option. Standard Grand National equipment was the tilt steering column, Delco AM/FM cassette player with clock, tinted glass and special Grand National Regal appearance appointments denoting the turbo and intercooler equipment. The interior is done in a gray cloth, featuring a floor shift, logo-stitched headrests and the plastic dealer-prep covers intact.
With interest in these models remaining high due to their notoriety when new, this example is an ultra-low mileage, investment-grade motorcar with the performance that still meets its legacy.
