The spiritual descendent of the fabled 300SL Gullwing coupe, the SLS AMG took the grand touring concept to new heights of style, luxury and performance, so it was natural that an open roadster version would follow. Introduced at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, the SLS AMG GT roadster inherited all the charms of the coupe version, most notably its thundering hand-built M159 V-8 engine, a naturally aspirated powerhouse capable of taking its host to 60 MPH in 3.8 seconds and a top speed just shy of 200 MPH. Like the 300SL roadster of old, the cleaner lines of the SLS AMG Roadster showed the overall design in a more pleasing light without sacrificing the coupe’s formidable performance. As the AMG GT approached the end of production, Mercedes-Benz announced the Final Edition, an $18,000 package limited to just 350 cars worldwide that included a mere 10 roadsters, including this rare and spectacular European-specification example. Its 6.3L/591 HP V-8 engine is the star of a performance extravaganza that also features the automatic transaxle, carbon fiber driveshaft, adaptive suspension, speed-sensitive power steering and large vented and cross-drilled disc brakes. The Final Edition is set apart by a front splitter, Black Series-inspired rear spoiler and a unique vented hood, all fabricated from carbon fiber; this example is further distinguished by rare Designo Magno Graphite Matte paint (a $4,500 option), the same used on the Final Editions shown at the dual Los Angeles and Tokyo launches and the five SLS AMG 45th Anniversary Special Edition cars. AMG-specific features also include Ride Control sport suspension ($3,000), 10-spoke black forged alloy wheels and a leather-and-Alcantara wrapped steering wheel. In keeping with its mission as the ultimate grand touring machine, this Final Edition roadster’s black leather interior incorporates the $4,500 optional Carbon Fiber Interior Package including carbon fiber console, door sill and seat trim, a Bang and Olufsen sound system ($6,400) and carbon fiber exterior mirror covers ($1,900). Showing just 796 miles, this 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Final Edition Roadster is a sterling example of the car that has attained iconic status. https://www.mecum.com/lots/1124526/2015-mercedes-benz-sls-amg-gt-final-edition-roadster/

    Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, 2011

Chassis No.: WDDRJ7HA8BA000647 $209,000 | Sold • Exterior: Black • Interior: Black • 3,100 miles since new • 6.2L/563 HP engine • 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission • Carbon fiber composite driveshaft • Aluminum spaceframe • Sport steering wheel with aluminum paddle shifters • Bi-xenon headlamps • Three-zone climate control • COMAND with navigation and voice control • Keyless Go • Leather and Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel • Gullwing doors • Optional 19 and 20 inch AMG 10-spoke forged light alloy wheels • Must be sold to an out of state resident or licensed dealer The first automobile designed completely in-house by famed Mercedes-Benz performance gurus AMG, this beautiful low-mileage 2011 SLS AMG is a study in bringing the classic and the modern together to create a sublime grand touring machine. The spiritual descendent of the 300SL Gullwing coupe of 1955, the SLS is the successor to the technologically innovative SLR McLaren, itself an intoxicating machine that drew heavily on modern F1 practice. But while the SLR was a collaborative effort with outside partner McLaren, the SLS is pure Mercedes-Benz, including its trademark gullwing doors and a speed-activated rear deck wing. It may seem passé in these days of carbon fiber structures to use aluminum for the space frame chassis, but the foundation of the SLS, a complex array of sheet and die-cast alloy pieces assembled using adhesive, welding, rivets and fasteners, is so strong that the aluminum body structure could be made extremely light at just 530 pounds. This rigid foundation maximizes the effectiveness of the SLS’s taut suspension, a mixture of aluminum double wishbones, front and rear sway bars and coilover shocks, all modulated by several modes of gearbox, shift points and stability and traction controls available to suit the driver. The SLS is the last Mercedes-Benz to use the M159 V-8 engine, a dry-sump, naturally aspirated 6.2L powerhouse that delivers 563 HP at 6,800 RPM and 479 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 through Mercedes-Benz’s first dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transmission and carbon fiber composite driveshaft to a limited-slip differential. AMG also engineered the SLS’s incredibly powerful ABS-assisted disc brake system, which comprises 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers, and 15.4-inch front and 14.2-inch rear discs. The SLS’s interior is traditional Mercedes-Benz fare: restrained elegance, quality materials, driver-centered ergonomics and gorgeous finishing, highlighted by the full range of features that include a sport steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles, dual-zone climate control and keyless ignition. Beautifully turned out in classic black on black and showing a mere 3,100 miles, this 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG may prove to be as highly prized in the future as the original Gullwing has become today. https://www.mecum.com/lots/465321/2011-mercedes-benz-sls-amg/

    Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe, 2011

Chassis No.: WDDRJ7HA1BA000599 $286,000 | Sold • Odometer: 5,714 miles • Engine: V-8 • Transmission: Automatic • Exterior: Magno Monza Gray • Interior: Light Brown • Body: Coupe • 6.3L/563 HP V-8 engine • Automatic transmission • Designo Magno Monza Gray Matte exterior–$3,950 • AMG Designo Exclusive Light Brown natural woven leather interior–$1,750 • Extended carbon fiber interior package–$4,500 • AMG leather and Alcantara steering wheel–$500 • Must be sold to an out of state resident or licensed dealer After a decade-long collaboration with McLaren that resulted in Formula 1 championships and the extraordinary Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren road car, Mercedes-Benz returned to its home base and its historical roots in 2010 to produce the SLS AMG coupe, a car that openly evoked the legendary 300SL Gullwing coupe of the mid-1950s. The SLS was the first car designed completely within Mercedes-Benz’s in-house performance arm, AMG, whose first step, as with the 300SL Gullwing, was to develop an aluminum space frame to provide a suitably rigid foundation upon which to build an uncompromising supercar, beginning with its hand-built 6.3L V-8 engine. Based on a reinforced aluminum block, that 6.3L V-8 incorporates forged internals, dry sump lubrication, a flow-optimized DOHC valvetrain and electronic sequential fuel injection to power out 563 HP through a dual-clutch 7-speed automatic transaxle. The SLS employed all-independent, aluminum double A-arm suspension with sway bars fore and aft and coilover shocks all around, with vented, cross-drilled and slotted disc brakes delivering ample stopping power. This 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe was delivered new with a stellar array of optional extras that generously enhance what is already a fulsomely-equipped sporting GT. Its unique Designo Magno Monza Gray Matte paint—a $3,950 addition—is complemented by the AMG Designo Exclusive Light Brown natural woven leather interior ($1,750), the $4,500 Extended Carbon Fiber interior package, the AMG leather and Alcantara steering wheel ($500) and a Bang and Olufsen sound system ($6,400). Riding on seven-spoke, light alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Cup rubber, the car also sports the optional carbon ceramic braking system, a feature that added not only spectacular fade-free stopping power but another $12,500 to the MSRP’s bottom line. The result is a masterful combination of Mercedes-Benz heritage and performance and AMG’s world-class power engineering in one sensational automobile. https://www.mecum.com/lots/1124527/2011-mercedes-benz-sls-amg-coupe/
