    BMW M6, 1988

Chassis No.: WBAEE1418J2561405 Auction: Monterey 2021 Auction date: August 14, 2021 Lot No.: S47 $52,800 | Sold • Exterior: Cinnabar Red • Interior: Natural • 1 of 1,632 built to U.S. spec • Cinnabar Red with Natural Nappa Highline leather interior • 3.5L/256 HP OHV inline 6-cylinder engine • 243 ft/lbs of torque • Getrag 5-speed manual transmission • Power windows • Air conditioning • BBS Metric wheels • Heated front seats • 89,475 miles • Must be sold to an out of state resident or licensed dealer Without doubt, the Paul Bracq-designed E24 6-Series coupe remains one of the most charismatic BMW models ever produced. Developed into its ultimate M635CSi specification by BMW’s “M” (Motorsport) division with power delivered by a wet-sump version of the M1 3.5L DOHC 6-cylinder engine, the M635CSi debuted at Frankfurt in 1983. Best known as the M6, it was produced in five distinct variations depending upon the destination market. In particular, North American export examples (Model 5514) were emission compliant, with the Type S38B35 engine utilizing a catalytic converter-equipped exhaust, and produced an SAE-rated 256 HP. Model 5514 production spanned November 1986 through September 1988. All M6 bodyshells were built by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany, with final assembly by BMW in Dingolfing, West Germany. Performance features included a front air dam, sport suspension, limited-slip differential and Michelin TRX Metric tires on alloy wheels. Options included power front seats, rear air conditioning and even a beverage cooler. BMW’s claimed performance data included 0-60 MPH acceleration in 6.4 seconds and a top speed nudging 160 MPH. With its spectacular performance, exceptional handling and roomy, comfortable interior, the E24-based M6 continues to rank as one of Germany’s—and the world’s—finest GT cars ever. Accolades came swiftly, especially from America, where hungry buyers had to wait until 1985 to buy one. Rare as one of as few as 1,632 examples built to U.S. specification, this 1987 BMW M6 is refreshingly finished in Cinnabar Red over Natural (Beige) Nappa Highline leather. Powered by a 3.5L/256 HP OHV inline 6-cylinder engine delivering a useful 243 lb-ft of torque with a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission, this M6 is equipped with air conditioning, power windows and heated front bucket seats. BBS Metric wheels mount Michelin radial tires and provide an excellent final touch. Mileage is currently 89,475 miles. As offered, this 1987 BMW M6 looks great with proper factory details remaining in place, and the exterior, interior and engine bay are clean and attractive throughout. Clearly a prime, collector-worthy example, this 1987 BMW M6 is a wonderful example of a truly legendary GT car. https://www.mecum.com/lots/465270/1988-bmw-m6/
