In the late 1970s, Italian manufacturer Lamborghini entered into an agreement with BMW to build a production racing car in sufficient quantity for racing homologation. The result was sold to the public, from 1978 to 1981, as the BMW M1. It was the only mid-engined BMW to be mass produced. It employed a twin-cam M88/1 3.5 L 6-cylinder petrol engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection. The M1 coupe was hand-built between 1978 and 1981 under the Motorsport division of BMW as a homologation special for sports car racing. The body was designed by Giugiaro, taking inspiration from the 1972 BMW Turbo show car. Originally, BMW commissioned Lamborghini to work out the details of the car's chassis, assemble prototypes and manufacture the vehicles, but Lamborghini's financial position meant that BMW reassumed control over the project in April 1978, after seven prototypes were built. The M1’s Italian look was no accident; it was styled by Italdesign and the original plan was to assign construction to Lamborghini. The plan fell through as Lamborghini began suffering through finance troubles; Marchesi took over production of the M1’s tube-steel chassis, while the fiberglass body pieces were made by Trasformazione Italiana Resina. Baur, the German coachbuilder long associated with BMW, handled final assembly. The M1 was essentially planned as a homologation special, and just enough, approximately 400, were built. The engine of choice was the 635-based 3.5L inline-6, which employed a twin-cam head, fuel injection and dry-sump oiling to produce 273 HP and a top speed of 162 MPH. One of 397 production road cars built from 1978 to 1981, this extremely rare 1980 M1 coupe pairs that powerplant with its original 5-speed gearbox. It is also one of 97 M1 coupes finished in orange and incorporates a ProCar-style front spoiler, the original factory Campagnolo wheels with Pirelli tires and correct black cloth-and-leather interior. Largely hand built, the car featured a tube frame and a sleek body designed by Giugiaro. Powered by a 3.5 Liter, DOHC inline-6 cylinder engine featuring Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, six throttle bodies and four valves per cylinder, the street version produced just under 300 HP. In full-race tune with turbos, it produced 800 HP. The idea behind the M1 was to serve as homologation cars to allow BMW to meet Group 5 regulations, with limited production of road cars. However, FISA, the organization that organized Group 5 racing, changed homologation rules to require that 400 cars to be built to qualify for Group 4. BMW continued development of M1 and was able to qualify for Procar Series, where raced the M1. It didn’t take long for the car to make its mark, leaving an incredible impression on the motorsports community. In 1982, the series had run its course and M1 production ended. It was at this time that Peter Gartemann, the owner a German BMW dealership named AHG, had the idea of taking an owner's street M1 and converting it to Procar specs. Called AHG M1 Studie cars, customers who turned their M1s over for conversion would receive a number of modifications to both body, chassis, and engine which was tuned to 350 HP. AHG commissioned Hermann Altmiks to paint each M1 in a unique scheme as directed by the customer. It is believed that only 10 were built, creating a unique spin of one of the rarest sports cars ever built. Presented here is one of the 10 M1s upgraded by AHG in 1982. It features Procar bodywork, a matching-numbers 3.5L/350 HP, DOHC inline 6-cylinder engine with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, 5-speed manual transmission, special racing clutch, adjustable racing suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, three-piece BBS wheels, leather interior and Herman Altmiks paint scheme in BMW livery.
