    De Tomaso Pantera, 1973

Chassis No.: THPNNK06566 Engine No.: 05640 Registration: YND 545L Sold De Tomaso's replacement for their successful Mangusta in 1971 was the avant-garde and stylish Pantera. Maintaining the best of the ingredients from the Mangusta, including the mid-mounted 300 horsepower, Ford 351ci, V8 Cleveland engine, five-speed ZF transaxle and dramatic styling, the Pantera also added monocoque construction into the mix, the first instance of De Tomaso using this construction technique. The Pantera was produced until 1991 with the last one being delivered to a customer in 1992. It was designed by American, Tom Tjaarda, making its public debut in Modena in March 1970 and was presented at the New York Motor Show a few weeks later. Power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes and rack and pinion steering were all standard equipment on the Pantera which could accelerate from 0-60mph in an eye-watering 5.5 seconds. The cars sold well with various derivatives emerging from the factory, although it is the early cars that have a certain purity ensuring they remain the most attractive and thus collectible. Presented in stunning red paintwork with contrasting black leather trim, this example of the ‘wolf in wolfs clothing’ is in fabulous order throughout. Recently converted to accommodate the height of the present owner, with a lowered floor and carbon seat (original seat included), this example also adds a touch of driveability. Sitting on new rear wheels with Avon CZZ's tyres fitted and upgrades include Wilwood brakes and Billet handbrake. The engine has, we are informed, just been rebuilt by the chairman of De Tomaso club with a roller top end, forged pistons, high flow water pump, Pertronix billet distributor, new crank and Quench heads, so we are assured this is a good strong engine coupled with a new clutch. Offered with a UK V5 registration document, the all important Marti Report and bills for the aforementioned maintenance, this is an example of Italian flair meeting American muscle and yields an incredible result. https://www.historics.co.uk/auction/lot/?lot=4362&au=77

    De Tomaso Pantera, 1972

Chassis No.: THPNMR02850 Engine No.: 87401807 Registration: SKK 615H • Rare Italian design with Ford reliability • Highly collectable with coachwork by Ghia Manufacturers such as Ferrari and Corvettes dominated the American sports car scene in the US during the late 1960s. De Tomaso had designs on developing a grand tourer that would appeal whilst taking advantage of an exciting streamline design, mid-engined engineering and a significantly more accessible price tag that would also sell in higher numbers. It was at this time that De Tomaso purchased the famous Italian coachbuilders, Ghia, and began to develop the brand-new concept, De Tomaso Pantera by Ghia. Still using Ford’s 5.8 litre Cleveland, V8 with a five-speed manual gearbox, the race inspired independence suspension benefited from four-wheel disc brakes all round and magnesium Campagnolo wheels with the master cylinders & battery housed in the front compartment for easy access. The interior featured an aggressive cockpit design, full instrumentation, factory air-conditioning and electric windows. This early 1972 example was originally sourced from a private collection in the Middle East before returning to Europe. It has recently had a new clutch and pressure plate fitted as well as a new gear linkage in order to facilitate the driving experience, especially when you compare it to the equally good quality of the, probably original, paintwork. The engine starts up with a new battery, distributer cap and relatively fresh engine oil. The carpet-lining in the front bay is in good order containing, as it does, the master slave cylinder and battery, also appearing to be sound although it does show signs of light surface corrosion. The De Tomaso club noted that the exhaust system appears to be an after-market unit although this is a relatively inexpensive item to change. It sports the correct Campagnolo alloy wheels all round for additional strength and lightness along with (205/70R15 front and 215/70R15 rear) Nexen tyres as well as the original leather pouch containing the scissor jack. These are highly sought-after sports cars with a smooth profile, particularly collectable when offered at this price point. De Tomaso Pantera, 1972

The cars sold well with various derivatives emerging from the factory although it is the early cars that have a certain purity ensuring they remain the most attractive and thus collectible. This stunning lefthand drive example is presented in white with a black interior, manual gearbox and air conditioning. It has been in California all its life and has recently been imported into the UK when it was registered into the present owners name for importation purposes. It has been dry stored since importation as part of a small private collection. The mileage is believed to be genuine and it comes with a current V5 with an MoT test certificate expiring in September 2018. This absolutely superb example of one of the most famous of all Italian muscle cars, must surely be one of the finest available today. Sure to turn heads both in looks and its glorious V8 soundtrack howling at high revs or indeed burbling at low speeds, simply awesome. https://www.historics.co.uk/auction/lot/?lot=8626&au=10
