For 1956, the biggest news was the larger-displacement engine that met the ad writers’ claims. At 340 HP, this 354 CI Firepower Hemi V-8 engine utilized a set of dual Carter 4-barrel carburetors beneath a stylized “batwing” air cleaner, with the engine name proudly spelled out on the valve covers. Behind this was the Powerflite automatic transmission. Owning a 300B offered a luxury experience even then, though Chrysler’s marketing used motorsports illustrations to promote the model. Of course, this car has factory niceties such as power steering, power brakes, the costly Chrysler Airtemp Car Cooling System, tinted glass and more. One further standout refinement on this particular car is the bright red exterior paint highlighted by a full-length chrome side spear, as well as the split design grille, forward raking of the tail lamp housings, and an upswept theme to the rear fenders. Inside is the posh interior done in tan, complete with heat and defrost, a Town and Country pushbutton radio, the in-dash clock, stylized gauge facings, pushbutton shifter, optional rear defrost outlet and script Chrysler logos. Small 300B emblems on the exterior gave the model easy identification to those wondering, while single headlamps melded perfectly with that year’s grille treatment and styled front bumper. In the rear, the dual exhaust emerges from under the rear bumper, which is upswept toward the tail lamp housings on each corner. The final touch of class are the bright wire wheels, now wearing a set of wide-whitewall tires that complement the body’s form and color. Detroit’s tastes were undergoing immense transitions in this era.
