The car ultimately scored six top five finishes and nine top 10 finishes, and was driven by Benny Parsons, Donnie Allison, Kyle Petty and David Parsons during NASCAR Cup races. Baker had won Daytona in 1980, but Richard Petty and Bobby Allison each won the following two years, both also in Buick Regals. Indeed, the brand was dominant in this era, with 22 wins in 1981, and 25 wins in 1982. Buick also won the 1981, 1982 and 1983 driver’s championships and the 1981 and 1982 manufacturer’s championships. This Regal is powered by a 355/600 HP Chevrolet V-8 engine capable of 487 lb-ft of torque. The car features a race-engineered frame and suspension, and custom aluminum work and cowl-design air-intake induction. The interior hosts a full roll cage and single driver’s seat, a full accompaniment of gauges in the custom dash fascia, and a Hurst floor shifter. A dash sticker references the late IMSA sports car builder Gene Felton. The exterior is covered in red paint with trademark UNO livery, plus sponsorship decals and insignia, fabricated spoilers for superspeedway stability, and Buddy Baker’s name on the roof. Pins secure the hood, the windows are braced, and the car rides on steel slotted racing rims and Goodyear Eagle speedway tires. Buick took advantage of its body styling and NASCAR rules changes to make history, which would eventually lead to its legendary turbocharged GNX release in 1987.
