The Toyota Land Cruiser was developed by reverse engineering an American Jeep discovered in the Philippines when Japan occupied that country. Used during the Korean War, the Land Cruiser proved itself as huge competitor to the Jeep and England’s Land Rover, offering certain advantages over each. One of the rarer classic Land Cruisers is the FJ-45 pickup. Few were built and fewer still exist today. The obvious evolution of the ever-popular FJ introduced in 1960 for mass production and worldwide consumption, the pickup advanced the Land Cruiser offerings with yet another fabulously utilitarian vehicle that served farms, markets, ranches and light construction workers alike.
Introduced in 1963, the pickups were offered on either the short-wheelbase or the new long-wheelbase chassis. Interestingly, the FJs were used extensively as ambulances by the UN and other government agencies. Various accessories and options were available, and the long-wheelbase pickup largely outsold the short-wheelbase version by about 3 to 1, making the short-wheelbase pickups very rare indeed. This FJ-45 Pickup was extensively restored by Arlington Toyota in Palatine, Illinois, and upgraded with a 4.2L 2F engine and 4-speed manual transmission.
The cylinder head was rebuilt during the restoration, and the 4-wheel drive pickup boasts the popular and nearly indestructible live front and rear axles, hydraulic front disc and rear drum brakes, and a powdercoated frame among other mentionables. Finished in light tan with a gray cloth interior, the FJ enjoys a newer door and windshield weatherstripping, shocks and pedal pads. The interior is a fabulous study in FJ simplicity with painted steel surfaces, a simple instrument grouping, beautiful black steering wheel, gear levers and much more. Under the hood, the engine and engine compartment both appear in as-new condition, with a multitude of painted, plated and raw surfaces.
Rolling on Firestone off-road tires with steel wheels painted black and topped by bright hubcaps, the entire scene presents surprisingly original, taking onlookers back to the early days of Toyota 4x4s.
