Launched in 2008, the Tesla Roadster was the first street-legal, all-electric car to utilize lithium-ion batteries, technology that enabled the Roadster to travel more than 200 miles on a single charge—a truly impressive figure for the time. Equally impressive were its performance and driving dynamics, thanks in part to a lightweight, nimble chassis borrowed from the Lotus Elise. Upon its release the Roadster was powered by a 248-horsepower proprietary electric drivetrain and was capable of 0-60 mph in less than 4.0 seconds with a top speed of 125 mph. An upgraded electric motor was introduced in 2009 for the Roadster Sport, which featured a modest power increase up to 288 horsepower and could accelerate to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.
In total, Tesla built approximately 2,450 Roadsters from 2008 to 2012. They have become quite historically significant as the first production model from a company that in many senses has helped to redefine the experience of modern motoring, and which has come to stand as the leader in high-performance “green” automobiles.
The Roadster Sport offered here was the 697th Roadster produced and is finished in white with a black interior featuring red Tesla-badged seat inserts. Aside from minor exterior signs of wear to the wheels, it remains in excellent overall cosmetic condition. It should be noted, however, that the battery in the car is no longer operable, and will need to be replaced before the Roadster Sport can be driven by a new owner.
This is a most appealing example of the original Tesla, in striking, uncommon colors and in outstanding cosmetic condition. It marks the first front in an automotive revolution.
