  • A classic Mercury “lead sled” custom, tastefully presented
  • Subtly modified with a lowered stance and “shaved” door handles and fuel filler door
  • Appropriately menacing color scheme
  • Chrome-dressed, dual-carbureted V-8 with Offenhauser heads; three-speed manual transmission
  • Desirable period touches including dual Appleton spotlights and Cadillac hubcaps

Mercury’s original post-war redesign for 1949 was a dramatic departure from the largely pre-war styling of the past, with a wide, sleek streamlined look. It was the ideal canvas for customizers, who would emphasize the car’s already attractive lines often by lowering it even further, selectively removing badges, and smoothing over protrusions such as door handles, while also upgrading the durable 255-cubic-inch flathead V-8. The resulting creations became popularly known as “lead sleds” and are some of the most memorable icons of 1950s American motoring.

This 1951 Mercury Eight Coupe Custom was given a tasteful “lead sled” treatment under prior ownership, with the door handles “shaved” and the fuel filler relocated inside the trunk, further streamlining the coupe’s beautiful lines. While Barris Kustoms badges are present, their involvement, if any, in modifying the car is unknown. Adjustable rear shocks provide a perfect, lowered stance, while dual Appleton spotlights, 1957 Cadillac hubcaps, and a tidy set of wide whitewall tires complete the car’s exterior appearance. A white interior with deep red dashboard accents furnishes a fitting and welcoming touch of contrasting color.

Under the hood, this Mercury’s flathead V-8 has been fitted with polished Offenhauser cylinder heads and a dual-carburetor intake for a welcome boost in power. The engine is further dressed up with a chromed generator, air filters, an oil filter canister, and a breather cap. Electric fans help to provide adequate cooling, while power is routed rearward via a three-speed manual transmission.

Acquired by the consignor several years ago from a fellow enthusiast who owned only black cars (!), this special Mercury has since been at home within a finely curated collection of significant automobiles and maintained to a high standard. While within the collection, it has been faithfully and routinely maintained by the consignor’s private mechanic.

Presented in a stellar color scheme and representing the peak of mid-century American custom styling, the aesthetic of this 1951 Mercury Eight “lead sled” blends

just

the right amount of chrome with excellent attention to detail. Projecting an aura of effortless cool in a way few other cars can, this spectacular custom will enhance any collection.
