The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren made its debut at the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show as a modern classic that combined visual elements of the legendary Mercedes-Benz 300SLR Sport Light Racer with contemporary performance engineering and carbon-fiber construction. Mercedes-Benz joined forces with its F1 racing-partner McLaren to create the grand-touring juggernaut in both roadster and coupe trims until 2009. This 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren has traveled just 1,189 miles and stands ready to deliver on its supercharged V-8 promise of 0-60 MPH in just more than 3 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 MPH.
The mid-front mounted 5.4L V-8 is rated for 617 HP with a Lysholm twin-screw supercharger in its valley that pumps 13 PSI of boost through dual intercoolers. The SOHC 3-valve-per-cylinder V-8 is backed by a 5-speed automatic transmission with selectable 3-mode shift-point programming and steering-wheel-mounted shift buttons for manual control and accompanying supercharged soundtrack from the dual side-exit exhaust. Four-wheel carbon-ceramic disc brakes work with the adaptive rear spoiler that automatically deploys at a sharp angle to function as an air brake and help slow the coupe from high speeds.
Opening the carbon-fiber-composite Gullwing-style doors reveals an interior handcrafted into a unique blend of pure sport and luxury-touring refinement. The bespoke red and black leather upholstery was optioned at great expense and envelops the two-place cockpit in handcrafted appointments with the black leather-wrapped steering wheel awaiting precision commands. Dual-zone air conditioning delivers passenger and driver cabin comfort.
The contemporary interpretation of the classic Sport Light Racer was factory equipped with a stability-control system specifically designed to work with the turbine-style wheel and Michelin Pilot Sport tire combination for maximum power delivery and confident road control. There is no question the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren will remain relevant for years to come because of its unique styling and breathtaking performance.
