Over 60 years since its March 1957 Geneva debut, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster continues to rank, along with the 300SL Gullwing coupe before it, among the most influential sports cars ever produced. Timeless in appearance and capable of electrifying performance even by today’s jaded standards, the 300SL Roadster’s technical sophistications, including its SOHC, fuel-injected 3.0L engine and improved fully independent suspension, remain advanced today. Of course, with its sensuous bodylines and avant-garde flair, the 300SL conveyed an image of adventure, speed and victory, even at rest.
Largely based on the W198 300SL Gullwing, itself derived from the W194 racing cars that dominated the 1952 racing season, the 300SL Roadster was internally designated “W198 II” and ushered in myriad updates while maintaining the sleek basic design cues and performance of its predecessor. Built around a revised and strengthened, yet lightweight, spaceframe, the 300SL Roadster featured conventional front-hinged doors and a more pleasant ride with more forgiving handling, all the while retaining the sporting essence buyers demanded.
A revised camshaft delivered additional power and performance, offsetting a minor weight penalty in return for the Roadster’s top-quality cloth convertible top, which disappeared neatly beneath a hard boot cover when lowered. As buyers expected, the 300SL Roadster was an outstanding performer with strong acceleration and a factory-claimed 137 MPH top speed. Just 1,858 300SL Roadsters were built in all from 1957 through 1963. One of only 324 300SL Roadsters produced for 1958, this example benefits from a comprehensive bare-metal restoration completed by Don Mertz Restorations in Sun Valley, California.
Distinctively finished in DB396 Medium Blue Metallic over blue leather upholstery, it’s powered by a proper 2996cc inline 6-cylinder engine with Bosch fuel injection, with that power delivered by a 4-speed manual gearbox. In addition to 4-wheel independent suspension, hydraulic drum brakes and 15-inch chrome wheels fitted with center caps, features include a Becker Mexico radio, fitted luggage and an owner’s manual. Coveted from new, the 300SL Roadster continues to weave its magic today as an unqualified icon that no serious sports car collection can be complete without.
