From introduction at the March 1957 Geneva Salon, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster continues to rank—along with the 300SL Gullwing coupe before it—among the finest and most influential sports cars ever produced. Instantly recognizable with its timeless appearance and capable of electrifying performance even by today’s standards, the 300SL Roadster’s technical sophistications, including its SOHC, fuel-injected, 3.0L engine and updated, fully independent suspension, remain the standard by which the world’s finest automobiles are judged today.

While the Roadster’s streamlined, wind-cheating styling is indeed similar to that of the prior Gullwing, removal of the fixed roof and carefully engineered chassis revisions allowed the Roadster’s use of conventionally front-hinged doors for easier, more dignified ingress and egress. A revised camshaft profile for the fuel-injected, alloy, 3.0L, inline 6-cylinder powerplant delivered additional power in concert with the new crop of higher-octane gasoline formulations available during the latter 1950s.

According to marque experts, just 1,858 examples of the glamorous Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster were produced at the company’s facilities in Sindelfingen, Germany, where they were largely hand-built to uncompromising quality standards from 1957 through 1963. The commanding presence and enduring mystique of the 300SL Roadster has remained exceptionally strong over the intervening six decades since it was produced and continue stronger than ever today with a worldwide enthusiast and owner/collector base.

One of 618 300SL Roadsters produced for 1957, this example retains its original matching-numbers 2996cc inline 6-cylinder engine (Engine no. 1989807500474), which is paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. Both the engine and transmission were rebuilt by the renowned Mercedes-Benz specialists at Scott Grundfor & Company. Refurbished in its original exterior color of DB180 Silver Grey, this 300SL Roadster is handsomely contrasted by red leather upholstery and a black convertible top. Highly desirable features include this Roadster’s early production horn ring location for the directional light actuator and extremely attractive and valuable Rudge alloy wheels with knock-off hubs.

In addition to a tool roll and roadside jack, this iconic Mercedes-Benz is accompanied by an owner’s manual and a copy of its original factory Wagenkarte (data card) documenting its original features and options.
