In 2017, McLaren Automotive established a new benchmark in the brief history of the hypercar phenomenon with the McLaren 720S coupe, a wondrous creation of advanced engineering that instilled lust in every reviewer fortunate enough to settle in behind its controls. Released in December 2018, the 720S Spider added open-air excitement to the already-breathtaking experience its coupe predecessor delivered. Built on a revised version of the 720S’ Monocage II monocoque, the Spider required no additional bracing to maintain structural integrity and maintained the 720S’ traditional dihedral doors.
The power-retractable carbon fiber roof raises and lowers in just 11 seconds at up to 30 MPH and, when closed, exposes the “flying buttress” passenger protection units featured on all convertible McLarens. Central to the 720S Spider’s persona is its marvelous M840T 4.0L twin-turbocharged DOHC V-8 engine and 7-speed Graziano dual-clutch automatic gearbox, a combination that translates the 710 HP on tap into 0-60 MPH times of 2.5 seconds and an awe-inspiring 212 MPH terminal velocity.
In contrast to its pure racing pedigree and savage on-track prowess, the 720S Spider envelops its occupants in sheer opulence, a fact clearly demonstrated by this 2020 example, which received a comprehensive 3-year service on January 26, 2023, at McLaren Dallas. Riding on grippy Pirelli P Zero tires fitted to Stealth-finish five-twin-spoke alloy wheels, its sinuous Onyx Black exterior finish is contrasted by the red painted brake calipers working on massive carbon ceramic discs at each wheel.
