Maserati, under the stewardship of Alejandro de Tomaso, launched the 'Bi-Turbo' in Autumn 1981. It was winter 1987/88 before a righthand drive version was made available to UK customers. Being 50% more expensive than the very successful BMW 325i, the Bi-Turbo Spyder was always going to be an exotic for the few.
Registered in September 1987 to Miss Amelia Field, our car was supplied by Broadfields of North London and six months later, she invested a further £2,410.00 with Autohaus of Finchley to fit the front spoiler, skirts and rear apron, along with electronic wing mirrors. Specified in 'Maserati Rosso' with beige leather and black hood, the car, unmodified and unrestored, still looks exceptional today. Having covered a mere 21,000 by 2003, it was acquired by Mr. Plant, as the second keeper. Bill McGrath supplied a cambelt shortly after his purchase and the car continued to receive frequent main dealer specialist servicing at 'Auto Shield Maserati' in Manchester.
They most recently changed the cambelt in 2013 with less than 500 miles covered since. Today, the car registers only 28,500 well documented miles.
The car retains its dashboard clock, Maserati script radio cover-plate, leather owner’s wallet with all booklets and several keys. The hood and paintwork remain in excellent order, as are the original alloy wheels, shod with matching Continental tyres. The car delivers brisk performance through the manual five-Speed ZF gearbox and a pleasing engine note.
This is a striking example with exemplary history from just two keepers across 31 years. It is very rare to find Maserati's with such low ownership and this example is certainly of serious collector’s quality.
