Conceived in the boom years of the mid-'50s, by the time the 1958 Lincoln Continental arrived, recession-conscious buyers were turning to smaller, more economical automobiles, and yet the new Lincoln returned in 1959 with few noticeable changes, an unapologetic luxury liner that was the largest Continental ever built, with a grand 131-inch wheelbase and an astounding overall length of 19 feet. The Continental’s bold styling and abundant brightwork were right with the times, especially when the larger offerings rivalling the Continental were also loaded with chrome and fins.
The 1959 Mark IV was the first Continental available with a convertible top in 10 years while costing far less than its mid-'50s predecessors. This restored 1959 Lincoln Continental convertible demonstrates the overflowing luxury that characterized these massive beauties. Formerly part of a renowned Lincoln collection, this beauty shows a believed-correct 69,000 miles on the odometer and still glides effortlessly under the ample power of its matching-numbers 430/350 HP V-8 engine.
Like all Mark IVs, its list of standard features is phenomenal: 3-speed Turbo Drive automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power convertible top, a padded instrument panel, deep comfort seats, scotch-grain leathers and deep-piled carpeting, AM radio and electric clock, six-way power front seat, power-operated windows and front window vents, and tinted glass. This Continental convertible presents in the formal combination of Presidential Black with Black and Ivory interior and a new Black top with a “breezeway” power glass rear window (in the same distinctive reverse-slant arrangement as hardtop versions).
It has air conditioning and wide Whitewall bias ply tires capped with the original restored wheel covers. Documentation includes the build sheet and owner’s manual.
