The fuller-bodied, roomier and better appointed Jaguar XK150 of 1957 continued the development path begun with the sensationally quick XK120 and reached its peak in the 3.8L XK150S of 1959, which boasted a top speed of 135 MPH. However, this prize-winning 1959 roadster continued that development path with the installation of the 4.2L block that came in after the model had been retired and was first installed in the 150 MPH E-Type in 1965. In the E-Type, the 4.2L/265 HP twin overhead-cam unit was mated to a relatively prosaic 4-speed transmission.

In this 1959 Jaguar XK150 Roadster, the engine—which was rebuilt by specialists at Muncie Imports in 2020 and retains the original cylinder head—is paired with an uprated Richmond 6-speed transmission. Sensibly the brakes have also been uprated. The XK150 was among the first road cars to adopt the stopping power of 4-wheel disc brakes, a “secret weapon” that played a key part in Jaguar’s 1953 Le Mans win with the C-Type. Here the original Dunlop units have been replaced by uprated Wilwood items inboard of the stainless steel-spoked chrome wheels.

Another subtle custom upgrade is the period-looking but more supportive tan bucket seat backs with side bracing, though the car also comes with the original and restored bench seat backs. The optional fog lamps, as commonly fitted to the XK150 3.8S, and Moto-Lita four-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel are also very much in the spirit of the era and testament to a thoughtful and comprehensive restoration that has preserved an original outward appearance and garnered multiple best of show trophies. The impressive specification is completed by electronic ignition, an aluminum radiator and halogen and LED lighting behind lenses of correct period appearance.

To that can be added the relatively rare correct tool roll and jack, along with trophies and extensive documentation including a delivery note to the car’s first owner confirming the car’s black body color, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, Jaguar XK150 operating, maintenance and service handbook, and restoration receipts, photo records of work undertaken and other documentation. Mike Hawthorn, who became Britain’s first Formula 1 world champion in 1958, was among the illustrious roll call of XK150 owners. There’s no doubt the man who raced wearing a bow tie would have enjoyed exploring this car’s potential.
