William Lyons instinctively penned some of the loveliest automotive shapes of the 20th century on a prewar generation of cars that in 1935 began carrying the Jaguar nameplate and leaping-cat radiator ornament, all bearing the rakish, classic lines of this striking 1939 SS Jaguar Saloon. The car’s timeless glamour attracted the attention of the late Stan Pfost of Florida as the subject of a unique Street Rod, staying faithful to Lyons’ vision with one significant and well-considered departure: Chevrolet power, in the form of a fuel-injected 350/350 HP LT1 Corvette engine mated to a GM 700R4 automatic transmission.
The frame-off restoration on the original body incorporates such flourishes as shaved door handles and brightwork and a frenched rear license plate housing over a custom tail-light panel, while also retaining the Jaguar’s signature large headlights, chromed vertical-bar front grille and sweeping high-crowned fenders. Custom two-toned white-on-cream paint emphasizes the car’s graceful lines, and the overall look of elegance is underscored by chromed front and rear bumpers and wide whitewall tires on chromed wire wheels that bear the classic “SS” octagon badge.
Jaguar interiors have always been a strength of the breed, enveloping occupants in fine materials trimmed with lacquered exotic woods and chromed brass trim. That approach too has been sedulously observed, again with well-chosen upgrades whose presence only enhances the driving experience. The handsome tan upholstery is handcrafted Connolly leather, accented with matching deep-pile carpeting. Beautiful burled wood on the dash, doors and window surrounds, and on the rim of the banjo-style billet steering wheel, which is mounted on a tilting billet column in front of Art Deco-look Classic Instruments gauges.
Power windows and air conditioning are also welcome additions, completing this elegant vintage Jaguar’s resurrection as a thoroughly modernized premium automobile with classic lineage.
