The year 1970 was the final full production year of the 6-cylinder Jaguar E-Type before it gave way to the heavier and longer Series III V-12 model. As such, this late Series II roadster represents the ultimate refinement and evolution of the 6-cylinder theme that had stunned the world with its looks and performance in 1961. Among the first major developments was an increase of the capacity of the race-bred 3.8L twin-overhead-cam inline-6 to 4.2L. At the same time, in 1965, the 4-speed manual transmission was replaced by a full synchromesh unit.

Electrics were now alternator, the servo on the 4-wheel disc brakes was beefed up, and in place of the spartan buckets was new reclining seating that was considerably more supportive. The Series II Jaguar of 1969 incorporated the improvements made over the years and added more, all in the interests of driveability, safety and comfort. Headlamps lost their covers and were moved forward to improve night driving, and the steering column was now collapsible and adjustable; the Girling all-round disc brakes that supplanted the Dunlop units were power assisted, and twin electric fans aided cooling.

Improvements to the interior included more comfortable adjustable seats (leather of course) with head restraints and a revised dash replete with an impressive array of rocker switches and dials, including a 160 MPH speedometer. Powered by a 4235cc DOHC inline-6, this 1970 Series II roadster in the classic livery of British Racing Green with beige leather and carpeted interior has been subjected to a comprehensive restoration completed in 2020 that included replating of the brightwork. In addition it has the rare factory-optional power steering that added $160 to the purchase price when new, and wire wheels that cost an extra $132 in 1970.

One thing the factory never offered, but many enthusiasts feel the E-Type needed, was the 5-speed manual transmission in place of the 4-speed unit, seen on this example. It’s a popular aftermarket upgrade that makes for better deployment of the power band, as well as offering gains in driveability. The 5-speed unit in this car has been installed by Aagaard Classics in Salt Lake City, Utah. A Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate, an operating, maintenance and service handbook and the hammer knock-off hub adapter and wheel jack completes the complement of this final-year 1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II Roadster.

One other point worth remembering is that back then, the E-Type’s point-of-entry price was $5,534, which was not much more than one third the cost of a rival Aston or Ferrari. That is just as relevant today.
