This 1959 Sunliner convertible represents both the first appearance of Ford’s Galaxie name as an upscale offering and a model that would anchor Ford’s big-car lineup for years to come. A rust-free North Carolina car that has been maintained in a climate-controlled showroom, this Galaxie 500 convertible is nicely optioned and accessorized with Master Guide power steering, a power top, pushbutton AM radio, chrome fender skirts, dual fender-mounted exterior mirrors and chrome Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels with wide whitewall tires.
Attractive in its contrasting two-tone red and white exterior combined with a tri-tone red, black and white interior, the convertible is powered by the 200 HP Thunderbird 292 CI V-8 backed by a column-shifted Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission. With its new Galaxie, Ford took a page from the Thunderbird playbook when it introduced the new top-of-the-line model as part of the 1959 Fairlane 500 lineup.
Announced shortly after the launch of the 1959 Fords, the six-passenger Galaxie was promoted as “Thunderbird in looks, Thunderbird in luxury, Thunderbird in everything except price.” Notably, the roofline borrowed heavily from the formal look of the Thunderbird, especially for the hardtops with the convertible adopting the Galaxie name by default as it was already a top-of-the-line model with all-vinyl upholstery and “Luxury Loom” carpeting. Ford boasted that the 1959 convertible’s rear window was nearly 50% larger and the convertible top folded down completely flush with the rear deck.
Bolstered by the Galaxie’s addition to the Fairlane 500 line, Ford nearly outsold Chevrolet for the 1959 model year, with 45,868 Fords leaving the factory as Sunliner convertibles.
