Offered at just 23,023 miles, this 1990 Ferrari Testarossa qualifies as a true collectible in every sense of the word. Introduced at the 1984 Paris Auto Salon as the replacement for the marvelous 512 Berlinetta Boxer, the Testarossa resurrected one of the most exciting names in the Ferrari lexicon and backed it up with a new level of refined performance. Originally it was two words that meant “redhead” in Italian, the name given to 4-cylinder Ferrari racing engines introduced in 1956 featuring red crinkle-finish cam covers.
In 1957, it was attached to the new 3.0L V-12 sports racers, then to the top 12-cylinder cars until 1962, when Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien drove the last Testa Rossa to victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The name returned as one word for the 1984 revival, this time attached to the top-ranking production Ferrari road car. In a break from tradition, the Testarossa body was both designed and built by Pininfarina, rather than being constructed by Scaglietti. The Testarossa’s body shape was extensively tested in Pininfarina’s wind tunnel.
The integrated front bumper and lower extension redirected air around the car and then up over the wide rear fenders, creating ample downforce and reducing rear lift, while the large side scoops were proved necessary for enough air to cool the twin rear-mounted radiators. Mandated by many countries for safety reasons, the distinctive—and controversial—body-side strakes have become a trademark feature and for several years were copied by any number of aftermarket aero accessory makers.
Beneath the car’s unmistakable shape are the makings of a Ferrari legend: double-wishbone front and rear suspension, ventilated 4-wheel disc brakes and the Boxer-derived 4.9L flat-12 engine and gate-shifted 5-speed transaxle and limited-slip differential. Equipped with double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, it generates 380 HP for a top speed of 181 MPH. Riding on Cromodora aluminum wheels and finished in gorgeous Rosso Corsa Red with a tan leather interior, this extremely low-mileage 1990 Testarossa is well-equipped for grand touring with comfortable accommodations that include air conditioning and power windows.
