In late August 1969, somebody walked into the Henry Oberling Dodge franchise in Portsmouth, Ohio, and purchased a new muscle car. This car, as friends and acquaintances immediately saw, was probably the rawest form of Dodge Material ever released for the street. Listed as No. 300 in the Charger Daytona Registry, there is no question that the hot, orange wild wing turned heads back then, and it certainly still does now. In fact, the Daytona offered here is powered by a matching-numbers 440 CI V-8 engine. The 375 HP workhorse known as the 440 Magnum used a 4-barrel carburetor and strong, well-engineered internal parts to become the standard mill in all R/T and sister GTX models until 1970.
Once coded A11, premium Charger R/Ts were the basis for all Daytonas, so they were already deluxe vehicles when they were moved to subcontractor Creative Industries to be equipped with streamlining parts like the wing, nose cone, fender scoops and special rear window. This car features an automatic transmission behind the engine and also came with the Code A36 3.55 Sure Grip axle plus power steering, power brakes with front discs, heavy-duty cooling and performance suspension pieces. The body wears correct EV2 Hemi Orange paint, accented by the white “DAYTONA”-lettered tail stripe and a black interior for a tri-color look.
The interior features bucket seats and the optional buddy seat in place of the console, the dash with a 150 MPH speedometer and clock, a three-spoke sport wheel with column shifter, a thumbwheel radio, driver’s side remote mirror and more. A “day two” Sunpro tachometer and gauges monitor engine functions. Outside are dual chrome mirrors, exhaust tips, a flip-open gas filler, hood pins, script Charger logos and chrome styled road wheels with red-stripe radial tires. Gorgeous and with its intact fender tag and a full broadcast sheet for provenance, there is a lot to be said for this wing car.
