An interesting piece of 1950s Americana with a known and traceable history back to 1956 and believed. to be the only Dodge Meadowbrook currently registered in the UK.
Purchased in 1951 in New York by a British officer on the Queen Mary, who kept it in New York for 18-24 months in order to avoid British import duties. After this, the Dodge was transported on the Queen Mary to Southampton and probably had to also keep it in the UK for a period before selling it without import duties. Subsequently sold to its first UK owner in Torquay through Sansom’s Central Garage in Paignton, Devon, for the then considerable sum of £600. Interestingly, the current registration LOW 661 was assigned at that time and remains a significant part of the vehicle's known history.
From that point onwards ownership can be traced through to its current custodian who remains a long-standing family friend of the first owner's family to this day. In 2006, ongoing maintenance suggested that more in-depth works were required, with the decision made that a comprehensive restoration should begin with Barry Hodson Motorsport being commissioned to complete the rebuild without concern to cost. Over the following few years the Dodge body was fully rebuilt, replacement panels manufactured and the engine totally overhauled including a ground and balanced crank together with the rods and pistons alongside a stripped and checked gearbox to ensure that all was as it should be.
At the same time the interior was refreshed as required and returned to its original period order. Advertised in period as a 'Big 6 passenger 4 door luxury saloon available at a price that will appeal to the economy minded', the Meadowbrook remains an imposing sight and still turns head to this very day. Your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged to fully appreciate this outstanding piece of Americana that has resided in the UK for almost 70 years.
