The storied era in which this restored classic half-ton LC-series pickup was built in was transitional. There were changes in 1936 with Dodge’s truck lineup, and the vehicle from noted collector Cliff Ernst’s holdings recalls the era fondly. The truck business had become a growing part of Dodge’s model line since acquiring the Graham Brothers, who had already been marketing their trucks through the Dodge dealer network. Now magnate Walter P. Chrysler came calling and purchased the entire marque from the Dodge estate (brothers John and Horace Dodge had passed by then) and began making true Dodge Trucks starting in 1929.
The decision proved fruitful as the Depression years meant practical transportation was often the only option for buyers. By 1933, Dodge trucks were being powered by a Chrysler-developed inline 6-cylinder engine designed for added durability. This is a 201 CI flathead 6-cylinder good for 70 HP and, as seen here, very nicely detailed to a near-OEM level. Behind is it the standard 3-speed manual transmission, and Dodge’s half-ton pickup line was changed to a true truck-type chassis with welded cross-members instead of the old chassis also used for cars. The LC serial plate remains mounted on the firewall.
The body retains all of its regular styling cues, covered in black paint with Nineteenth Century Mercantile livery. This is matched by nice tan interior upholstery on the seats accented with green on the dash and door panels. The transmission is floor-shifted, while gauges are factory and there is even a small fan center-mounted to the windshield frame. Outside, the biggest adaption would be wood bed rails, but there are also primary and auxiliary headlamps, grille-mount Dodge Brothers insignia, bumpers with multi-piece guards, and centered ram hood ornament. The classic look finishes off with wide whitewall tires and a side-mount spare tire.
While rodding has also found a home for these trucks, if you want one that recalls that prewar era of style and durability, perhaps this “Nineteenth Century Mercantile” Dodge can bring you up to date.
