Previously owned by Richard and Karen Carpenter of “The Carpenters” fame, this 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Newport hardtop is highly original and complete with documents including articles, photographs and a scrapbook made by Karen Carpenter with pictures and memorabilia from car shows. Finished in two-tone Cloud White and Soft Rose paint, just 4,155 New Yorker Newport hardtops were produced in 1956, a year Chrysler promoted the Virgil Exner design as “PowerStyle,” an overall look that was introduced in 1955. The one-year 354/250 HP Hemi V-8 engine features a cast-iron block and dual exhausts and is linked to a Powerflite automatic transmission with dash-mounted pushbutton controls.
Well equipped, this New Yorker Newport is fitted with power steering, power brakes, both a steering wheel clock and an in-dash clock, power windows, a power bench seat, dual sideview mirrors, an AM radio and the Highway Hi-Fi 16-2/3 RPM record player. Complete with a custom license plate frame, this New Yorker Newport two-door hardtop was featured at the Northeast Classic Car Museum in Norwich, New York, for two years. Thanks largely to the extensive engineering and rigorous construction methods that Chrysler Corporation was known for, fanatics agree that the 1955 and ’56 ChryCo products were some of the best the company had ever made.
Their power steering and power brakes, along with a very durable automatic transmission, made them some of the era’s easiest cars to drive. Interiors were smartly styled and complete with leather upholstery and a healthy number of standard features, creating a marvelously luxurious car. As the Imperial became a standalone brand for 1955, the New Yorker would serve as Chrysler’s most luxurious offering. Available as a four-door sedan, station wagon, two-door hardtop coupe and convertible, there was a New Yorker for everyone.
