Arguably the finest example in existence, this 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible from the esteemed Clyde Horst Collection has been both recognized and validated with myriad awards, including one at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours, six AACA Preservation awards, AACA Grand National Senior 2016 honors, the AACA Chocolate Town Trophy National award in 2010, AACA Grand National First in 2010, AACA Senior in 2009 and AACA Junior First in 2009. The car was also treated to a comprehensive body-off restoration completed in 2009. Since that time, it has only been driven 59 miles. The car has been in Clyde Horst’s care for the last 35 years and stored in a climate-controlled garage.
One of only 921 produced in the model year, the 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible was at the top of the food chain when compared with its lesser Windsor brethren, and its significant purchase price reflected that status. It came equipped with the 354 CI “Hemi” engine that developed 280 HP and 380 lb-ft of torque, making this Chrysler New Yorker convertible a potent performer. This generation of the Hemi engine—designated by Chrysler as the “Fire Power”—was a novel design that featured hemispherical-shaped combustion chambers.
This engine had already proven to be a performance icon in NASCAR and road racing, and its basic engine architecture is still used today in the world of NHRA top fuel dragsters and funny cars. Designed by the legendary automotive designer Virgil Exner, this elegant New Yorker is finished in two-tone Rosewood Tan/Sandwood Beige with a white convertible soft top and matching full leather interior. It is highly optioned, with a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats, dual exhaust system and the Highway HIFI record player.
