This is a gorgeous example of a 1961 Chevrolet Impala and represents one of the Bowtie’s most desirable cars—a coveted Bubble Top with a Tri-Power 348 CI V-8 engine, power steering, power brakes, dual-exhaust system and a 4-speed manual transmission fitted with a floor-mounted shifter linkage. The product of a comprehensive frame-off restoration, this Impala Bubble Top presents in showroom-like condition with a period-correct color scheme of red with a flashy two-tone red-and-white interior.
Featuring a stock appearance configuration with full-size spinner wheel covers, narrow-band white sidewall tires, Wagner halogen headlights and SS badging on the interior and exterior, this car has real road presence. It’s not surprising that the Impala Bubble Top turned out to be such a graceful design. Conceived under the watchful eye and direction of Bill Mitchell—the legendary head of styling for General Motors—its style is instantly recognizable for the shapely slender C-pillar combined with a large-expanse curved rear window, giving the car a unique look that found favor with enthusiasts.
Drag racers of the era loved the induction system, with three 2-barrel carburetors helping to give the 348 CI V-8 the necessary shove to rock and roll down the quarter mile. Notable for its level of equipment, this car features factory options such as tinted glass, dual antennas, a split-bench seat, chromed rearview mirrors and a steering-column-mounted Sun Tach. Bubble Tops with this specification of equipment, powerplant and manual transmission proved to be a performance status symbol of the time and were often referred to by the youth market as Corvettes with a rear seat.
This striking machine has been stored in a climate-controlled garage and has not been driven since the completion of its restoration.
