Considered by some to be the epitome of all finned releases of the ‘50s, the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Seville Coupe and sister Biarritz convertible were scarce even when new. Hardtop examples like the Seville offered here saw only 975 units constructed in 1959, all featuring extreme luxury for this era as standard equipment and unique trim not found on any other Cadillac in the year’s lineup. Riding on a 130-inch wheelbase and an incredible overall length of 225 inches, nothing matched it (or the highest-ever tailfins the brand ever released).
With a curb weight of approximately 5,000 pounds, all Eldorados came with a 390 CI Cadillac engine, the 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission and a 3.21 final axle ratio. The Seville nameplate and design was only offered from 1956-1960 before Eldorado returned to its convertible-only branding, and this car was actually priced exactly the same as a Biarritz convertible ($7,401) in 1959. Previously owned by Phillip Maloof of the Las Vegas Palms Hotel family and kept in his private collection for decades, it has been with a single owner since 1995.
Rarely found, let alone offered in this color combination, the car is in its original Persian Sand color with some lacquer refinishing applied in the early 1960s. The beautiful interior’s dash, door panels and headliner are original, with the seats redone with original leather and material from SMS fabrics. Outside, the car retains the original Eldorado-only vinyl top (an uncommon touch in this era) and its extensive original chrome. Kept in New Mexico for many years, the original engine and transmission were rebuilt, with the original Tri-Power and Air-Ride components removed back in the 1960s.
This sale will include original repair receipts, and the car has been entered in events including the Palos Verdes Concours and San Marino Concours. Unmistakable with the paired high-mount bullet tail lamps, exclusive broad and curving side moldings, three-row matched rear grille insert and exclusive interior patterns, this Eldorado Seville was literally in “a realm of its own,” both then and now. The next owner will likewise represent this standard of excellence.
