When BMW introduced its M1 supercar in the late 1970s, it showed the world that the company had graduated to the supercar class, and with just a normally aspirated 6-cylinder engine. To sustain the spice and broaden the market, the company took a modified version of the M1’s inline 6-cylinder and installed it in the E28 535i to create what was, at the time, the world’s fastest four-door sedan. BMW worked its magic over the chassis and added various subtle styling nuances to set the new M5 family sedan apart from its lesser siblings, creating what would become one of the most sought-after performance four-doors of the 1980s.
Only 1,340 were said to have been made for the U.S. market, and this one showed just 58,955 miles at the time of consignment. The S38B35 inline 6-cylinder engine was rebuilt by Korman Autoworks and enlarged to 3.6L using a new crankshaft, special pistons and a special crank hub. Equipped with factory individual throttle bodies and a newer exhaust system, the Getrag 280 5-speed manual transmission was replaced in 1998, and the water pump, idle air control valve hose, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and ignition wires were all replaced in 2025. At the same time, the power steering pressure hose, hydraulic brake booster and brake fluid were also replaced.
Only available in the United States in Schwarz (black), this example is fitted with a Natur, or beige, leather interior with heated, power-adjustable front sport seats, power windows, a power sunroof, air conditioning, a three-spoke M-Tech steering wheel, a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR46 stereo system and cruise control, among other upscale amenities. Drivers will appreciate the 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS and ventilated front rotors, the H&R lowering springs with Bilstein front and rear shocks, and Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season tires with 16-inch basketweave alloy wheels.
